What I would like to know is, how to add a download link in the emails sent to a new user, I would like to offer a free download to all new users.
Is this possible and how would I go about it?

HI, Graham.

This is possible and would be quite easy to do.
First you need to decide in which email you want to add that download link.
Then use Joomla! languege override feature to crate override for that email text.

Copy short part of new user email ans search it in search field.
Click on correct result and language constant and text will be displayed in active text fields at left.
Finally in text field you may add a html link to your download.
