I would like to setup my home page.

When you type in www.jomsocial.com/ you see a page thats shows what your website has to offer.

How can I make my homepage show more info thats only viewable when you first type in my website url?

This is not related with JomSocial but rather with Joomla! administration.
You need to create article with certain content and andds modules to certain position.
Then create menu item that links to that article, set modules to display only for that certain menu item.
Then set that menu item as default (star icon in menu item list).
From now on it will be your start page.
