I have Joomla 3.4 and installed JomSocial 4.0.8 pro. Now there is an update and I thought it would be an easy update like other components. How do I do this exactly please?

for jomsocial upgrade you can using ijoomla installer.

that ijoomla installer included at jomsocial pacakage.

you can upgrade it from joomla extensions manager by downloading the package from jomsocial.com > my account

for error message at members module:
please goto joomla extensions > modules manager > open that members module, and Enable list sorting filters

I must be stupid because where is the license number exactly to use the ijoomla installer for an upgrade? Everything I try gives me a blank white page.

Or can I just upload using joomla? If so do I have to uninstall first or upload over my existing 4.1.4 version?

please download jomsocial 4.1.6 at jomsocial.com > my account.
unzip that file, you can find ijoomla installer at there.
install it again from joomla extesnions > manage, upload package file. after that try to upgrade your jomsocial by using ijoomla installer again.
you can find jomsocial license number at jomsocial.com > my account. if still cant, please upgrade your jomsocial using traditional way, from joomla backend > extensions > manage, upload package file. No need to uninstall anything, jomsocial will automatically detect your prev version.
