jomSocial Stream is very slow

ISSUE SUMMARY: All pages on jomSocial act and respond properly except for the dashboard / stream. It takes over 6 seconds to load very little information and then the AJAX runs for another 1.5 minutes to process the rendering of the rest of the page. It is extremely painful. We have added more memory, processing power to the server, recompiled everything and updated all software with no changes to the issue. I have even installed APC and tried regular cache. Although doing so resulted in the like and unlike buttons to not work. We upgraded the site from jomSocial 3.x on our dev server just as a test - and ironed out all those bugs. We then proceeded to do the same process to the live site and everything works fine except for the stream page which is a crucial part.

1: I have updated all software and recompiled apache
2: The server processing for the stream spikes on each load ( monosnap.com/image/tSuWs08AmfLSDUxix1EEov8VMhA0X3 )
3: I have turned on and off cache which doesn't seem to result in any further changes. ( monosnap.com/image/4dTXM1J8sM2QZTWJ7kWSkALyzA4xNV )
4: I have turned off infinity scroll and no changes
5: I have turned off ALL modules on the page except for search. This did however speed up the full page load from 3 minutes to 1.5 minutes. But still there is a considerable amount of AJAX that is being run that is pooling for information making the full page render super slow.

Issues that we are experiencing:
1: The stream is extremely slow. < sarcasm >My dial up was faster 15 years ago then the loading of the stream. < / sarcasm >
2: Like and unlike do not work when cache is turned on. When the page is refreshed it goes back to what it was before. With the cache turned on the pages throughout the rest of the site render faster. But I have had to resort to turn it off since it does not work properly.
3: The notification at the top doesn't work. When it says 1 or more messages are available. You click it and it shows the new message. But when the page is refreshed it goes back to the resulting display of showing 1 or more messages are available and the message is gone. This is with cache and without cache turned on.

STEPS TO REPLICATE:
1.Open up chrome debug or firebug
2. Login with supplied login
3. Take a look at how long it takes to login to the site

RESULT: Extremely SLOW load time. All other pages load within 1.5-2 second load time.
EXPECTED RESULT: Should load full page load in 1.5-2 seconds like the rest of the site.
BROWSER: ALL newer and modern browsers both Windows and Mac.

Lastly I have gone through every plugin, module and turned on and off to see if there is an effect. I have spent the past 2 days investigating and I have come up empty. Your help is greatly appreciated as many users will be hitting this site this coming week.

Hi, Staven.

I assign developer to this thread.

- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.

Hi Steven,

please upgrade to jomsocial 4.0.5 we have some performance improvements there.
and I saw your server still using 128 MB for memory limit

it would be great if you can follow jomsocial recommendation:

The issue still exists. Nothing has changed with the updates to the server, or the updates to the software. I have created a video to further explain the issue.

Hi, Steven.

I can access your site backend but not frontend... it says "login failed" each time.
Also when I view profile stream (when non-logged in) your site loads for me in 6 seconds.
Please, check frontend access...

Hi, Steven.

Ok, I'm in. I've checked your site main activity stream... and it's quite fast for me. Please, take a look on my screencast:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=To82kLvvFxQ

On my connection it take about 9-15 seconds to load whole activity frontpage.

Here is my connection speed: www.speedtest.net/my-result/4324806568

I use Mozilla FireFox for Ubuntu ver 34.0.

So it may be your connection speed... or firewall speed limit... or browser issue.
Please, try on different computer... on different connection speed. maybe ask your users?

By all means this is FAR from fast. The page should load within 2 seconds or less on a connection speed that you have. There isn't much data being displayed. This just isn't acceptable. The issue is that the side bar loads well after the page is loaded and the status loads well after everything else. If anything the status input should be the FIRST thing to load on the page instead it has the opposite effect. Even with caching, server settings and everything setup as speced out by your documentation it is still very slow. Everything else except for the stream runs SPEEDY FAST. The stream is just DOG slow.

Lets also be clear on a few things:

1: I have APC configured.
2: On FIRST PAGE load (before cache) the page takes over 1.1 minutes to FULLY finish loading. This is insane - and while most things load within 15 seconds or less this is still a significant amount of time - yet the rest of jomsocial renders in less than 1.5 seconds.

Even if you navigate away from the page and come back the page still takes approx. 1.1 minute. All my tests are on pretty large pipes (internet speed). We sit on a very larger backbone and all aspects of load times are pretty fast. But 1.1 minute is just insane. Heck no one wants to even wait for more than 2 seconds for a page load.

When I take a look at the calls there are several hundred calls to globalpokerlink.com/?filter=apps&value=profile - really do we need to make individual CALLs out? Can't we make 1 call to the server and take the data and utilize it throughout? This seems to be where the bottle neck occurs. I have apache cranked up to take more calls at 1 time from 1 user since it is is about 10-20 at any given moment from 1 user.

Really there is something wrong with the stream and it really needs some tweaking. Imagine if someone wasn't on internet speeds as you and I. We are talking about 1-5 minutes for people to load FULL page. That is just not at all something that is good for business at all.

So please take a deeper look into this - yes things load within 15 seconds (which is still horrible) but you have to look at the TOTAL load time of the entire page which is 1.1 minutes.

Hi Steven,

I just wanted to update you further to my reply by PM. Our head developer Alex is discussing this with our Javascript developer. They are actively debugging the issue but due to different time zones there may be a break in the reply (they finish their shift soon) I will follow-up with both of them in the morning to make sure it is progressing as a suitable speed.

Hi Steven,

The developers have found the issue and made changes to a file that i have replaced directly on your site the file is

\components\com_community\templates\jomsocial\layouts\privacy\show.php

I have named the original show.php_out and it can be safely removed once you test things on the site

We have added the fix now to our repo so it will be included in the next release. Thanks for being patient and persisting with this the developer had a hard time finding the issue but hopefully it is worth it now.
Please let me know your feedback once you check the site

have a good day
