My config file was set to 444 but in order to install JS I had to change
it to 755. But when I change it back to 444, I get errors like below. Is it safe
to leave it 755? I just installed JS and was in the process of setting the cron job.

configuration.php already 444, joomla error reporting already maximum. I've got no any errors.
