I need to upgrade version 1.8.6 to the latest version and I am trying to do a tier upgrade, unfortunately the link provided to download the older versions doesn't work. I always get a 404 error. Please could you tell me where I can download older versions?

BUT, you can do the shortcut to do the upgrading.. you can update your jomsocial to the latest version directly, after that you apply the database patch manually and one by one, here is the db patch files www.dropbox.com/home/Jomsocial%20patch/db_patches?share=1

I also need to update Joomla as the site is currently 1.5 and according to the documentation I found I need to first update Jomsocial to 2.6 before updating Joomla and then updating Jomsocial again. Will this patch method work with that type of update? I think I will at least need 2.6 so if you could email that it would be appreciated.

You should register and login to dropbox for downloading it.

That patch only for update the JomSocial database, for joomla upgrading you can find the documentation on joomla site.
