I am running JOMSocial 3.2.0.7 on Joomla 3.2.3 and PHP 5.3.3.

I am confused about system requirements for upgrading to JOMSocial 3.2.1.
Based on this document: documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/Joomla_Versions_Compatibility , I should be running Joomla 3.3.x in order to run JOMSocial 3.2.x .... but JOMSocial 3.2.0.7 seems to otherwise work just fine on my Joomla 3.2.3 instance.

The confusion get worse compared to your own System Requirements page, which may now be out of date: documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/System_Requirements , which implies that JOMSocial 3.x is happy on any version of Joomla 3.x -

So what am I to believe? Can I safely upgrade to JOMSocial 3.2.1 on my Joomla 3.2.3 instance, or is it really better to upgrade to Joomla 3.3.1 (which also requires that I upgrade my PHP to 5.3.10 or higher)?

I suggest you update your Joomla to the latest version, and update your PHP version too, it will safe for you.. since in next Jomsocial mayor package we will supported and first test for the latest Joomla version.
