I took a look at activities.profile.php and saw that the target="_blank" is not hard coded in. I assume you are using JavaScript to insert this blank target... Where is this Javascript or tell me how you are doing this. Not very mobile friendly when a user clicks a link and it opens another window. Please advise, thank you very much.

you can find it at: /components/com_community/templates/default/activities.index.php at the bottom of page.
I suggest you to make override for any changes. documentation.jomsocial.com/wiki/Customizing_Template

so it upgrade process will not gone.
