Upgrading old Jomsocial 2.4.2 to 2.6 or 2.8

We have an old version of jomsocial, and we want to start an upgrading process at least to jomsocial 2.8

With the current version of jomsocial 2.4 we have made several modifications to the default template, so we have already created a backup of the current site, we need to know what is the best way to manage the update of the new versions.
