I've attached a screenshot of our cron jobs. There's nothing that would be deleting files.

Also, you demo site stores the images in the Comments directory. Is that the correct behavior

I test this, and create new event bsmartguide.com/connect-with-our-communi.../368-test-event.html

I put 2 images from my hardisk bsmartguide.com/images/comments/original...40777866d008046d.jpg and
from external URL scontent-sin1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa...0618ce48&oe=57377421

ran cron job 2 times, and seems the issue didint come.. I will wait until tomorrow or next hours to check it.

I leave the event for a day, and I cant find the issue, everything is working fine.. the image in event detail is still showing fine

Unfortunately your image is now gone. I also created a new event yesterday and the image remained for about 1 hour and then disappeared as well. I've attached a screenshot of the event you created.

Got it, this is valid bug, I can replicate this on my local.
For temporary fix, you should modify this file components/com_community/libraries/cron.php, comment or remove this code :

$this->_removeTempPhotos();

What is the status of a proper fix for this?

The proper fix will available in next release, since the patch is complicated if you wanna apply it in current version
