I was asking this very question at the beginning of the year as really need to be able to add custom fields to the groups (using jomsocial and not by hacking the code if possible).

In my long search I came across this which seems perfect:

But unfortunately I don't think they are developing it any more - at least I can't find anything beyond Joomla 1.6 and Jomsocial 2.2.2. It is such a shame as it looked such a good component.

Is it possible with the latest Jomsocial (I am testing latest beta version) but sadly, cannot see anything that suggests this.
If it isn't possible, then do you or any other community member know of a third party solution that would allow us to do this?

I did come across a thread from someone else who asked the same question and this was Dimas's response:

Currently we dont have plan for it right now, but we are talking this feature in the future. I cant promise this feature will be available soon. For time being, I suggest you use desc on event / group if you wanna add more fields data.

really sorry, jomsocial still providing custom fields for groups. and there is no 3rd party that seriously build it.
you can put user voice at here:

currently you can put any text at groups "description"

I did a user voice about 8 months ago and it didn't have any impact. Are you saying we can create input fields etc. in the description box? If yes, how do I get started?

Is it ever likely that you will be adding ability for custom fields? As if this isn't a possibility, I sadly will need to probably find an alternative solution for my project :(

sorry. if you want put input field it cant. I mean if you want put e.g contact detail you can put it under group description.
I suggest to find developer who can build this customization for your project.

we still not have any planing to put it at 4.1
