Unfortunately adding new group categories is not working for me as nothing happens when I click on that button.
I already read that it could be related to jbetolo but although I disabled it for testing purposes the problem remained.

Do you have an idea what else could be the cause? and how to fix it?

You are using old Jomsocial version 3.1.1, please you do the upgrading to version 3.2.1 for fixing this.
