Can JS be setup into different groups of members, where they can only share within their group?

This is possible, the user can create the group and share any activity only for that group only.

Ok, so can it be set so that only admin can create groups, and members (by type) are automatically assigned to groups for them? Ie. lodging members are part of the lodging groups. And only receive information from that group?

Yes that is possible, but for sycn the profile type with the group, you need use the 3rd party extension because this is impossible by default Jomsocial functions. You can try this www.jomsocial.com/addons/core-enhancemen...jomsocial-auto-group
