jQuery or other similarly conflicting script! Try disabling recent third party extensions you've installed, then re enable one at a time until the conflict again presents itself.

How can I change the max allowed characters in my post area?

Make sure your template CSS supports the extra characters properly when adding high character limits. Just something I ran into with a previously install, whilst using the T3 Socialise v2.12 release, however I'll readily admit that I've not as yet encountered similar issues in the current version. Hope this helps. This is my opinion, I could be wrong!
