JomSocial translation capability is limited to non-user generated phrases & texts. The translation engine does not support direct/automatic translation of user content and generated contents, for example text that has been submitted through the custom profile fields.

This is a non-exhaustive list of areas that will not be translated by JomSocial:

  • User-submitted content in custom profiles
  • User-submitted content in group descriptions
  • User-submitted content in group discussions
  • User-submitted content in group bulletins
  • User-submitted content in Status
  • User-submitted content in photo descriptions
  • User-submitted content in photo comments
  • User-submitted content in video descriptions
  • User-submitted content in video comments
  • User-submitted content in wall
  • User-submitted content in wall comments
  • User-submitted content in private messages

Please note this tutorial is for JomSocial 2.0.x and below.

Locate JomSocial language file

Our default language for JomSocial can be found at ~/administrator/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_community.ini for backend language file and ~/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_community.ini for frontend language file.

Download translated language for Joomla and JomSocial

Firstly, we will download translated language for Joomla. You can find and search your preferred/translated language from these two sources:

  1. Official Translation Team at joomla.org
  2. Joomla Extension Directory - JED

For this guide, we will use Swedish language in our walk through. Download the files from either source, and extract it. Upload the site (or frontend) language file to ~/language/ and the administrator language file to ~/administrator/language/

Next, find and download JomSocial translated language file from JomSocial Addons Directory (click here). Extract and upload the files to ~/language/[your preferred language folder]. The file should look something like ([your_language_code].com_community.ini), which in this guide should be "sv-SE.com_community.ini".

Setting up translated language

Now to setup the translated language on your site, log into your Joomla backend. Go to Language Manager under Extensions tab.

Next, select the preferred language and click the "Default" button.

Now your site has been translated to your preferred language!

If you are running multi-lingual sites, you will find that JomSocial can handle your requirements with ease.

All JomSocial phrases are translatable and they are stored in one language file, which is {joomla.root}/languages/en-Gb/en-gb.com_community.ini.

However you will quickly notice that we do not provide language strings for items in JomSocial toolbar. The reason we do not explicitly code toolbar strings in the language file is because the phrases are retrieved directly from Joomla Menu Manager.

For a site with just one language, this would not be much of a problem. Administrators can easily translate the phrases by going to Joomla Menu Manager > JomSocial Toolbar and translate from there.

What if I have multiple languages enabled on my site?

If you have more than one languages, it is not directly possible to translate via the Joomla Menu Manager.

Well, here's a cool trick in JomSocial that you can easily achieve.

We have carefully thought of this issue and the best method to allow translatable JomSocial Toolbar items is by utilizing Joomla JText properties.

To cut things short, simply add these strings in your language file, {joomla.root}/languages/xx.Xx/xx.Xx.com_community.ini and translate them accordingly. Please make sure that the menu are in CAPS and the translated menu are in " ".
