There are two types of JomSocial Groups:

Public Groups
Anyone can join and view all the contents found in a public group, even without joining.

Private Groups
Other than Group Information and Description, all the contents of a private group cannot be viewed by anyone, except the group members, managers, administrators and super users.

Common Group Related Issues

I do not see any link to Upload Video or Photo on my Groups page
There are a few possibilities behind this issue.

  1. Is your group actually allow Video and Photo upload? Check the Group's setting and verify that both are enabled.

  1. You are using an old template override for your JomSocial template. Try to disable template override and see whether it helps. If you are not sure what a template override is, check the existence of /templates/{yourcurrenttemplate}/html/. If there is a 'com_community' folder in /html, then it is confirmed you are using template override. To disable this override, rename com_community to a different one, perhaps com_community_old.

Symptom
Creating Group gives DB Error 500
Problem is actually because the file /com_community/libraries/featured.php did not include the core file. If you are having similar problems, edit that file and place the following codes at around line 2,
{code}require_once( JPATH_ROOT . DS . 'components' . DS . 'com_community' . DS . 'libraries' . DS . 'core.php' );{/code}

Group Feature

Group is an essential part of a social system. Through JomSocial Group, you will be able to provide Announcement / Bulletin feature, a Discussion utility, Video and Photo uploads, and a common place for users of the same niche.

Configuring Group Feature

The main configuration for Group feature in JomSocial is accessible via the JomSocial Global Configuration.

Setting up Group Categories

After configuring Group, you might want to set up new categories for your groups. To set the categories, head over to Components > Groups > Groups Categories. By default, there are 5 main categories for your users to choose from.

To set a new category, simply click on New and a cWindow will popup for you to submit it.

Creating a Group

Image:Groupscreate.jpg So how do you actually create a group? To create a group, you will have to login at the frontend. You will see a 'Create Group' link at your profile area.

Image:Groupscreate2.jpg You will then get redirected to a group creation page.

Managing Groups

Image:Groupsedit.jpg As an admin, you can edit a group detail by going to Components > JomSocial > Groups. Select a specific group and a cWindow will appear for you to edit the group information.
