I have a main level menu item (Shopping) that points to an external URL. I have it set to open a new window regardless what setting I use but it doesn't; it opens the external URL in the same (Parent) window.

As an aside, I have a sub-menu item (Store) in the same menu tree defined exactly the same way and that one works.

Why doesn't the main menu item, Shopping, work?

It seems a valid bug.
So far it will work if there is no sub menu.
I will inform to our developer to take right action.

Please upgrade your JomSocial and socialize latest versions, this problem should be already fixed there.

I'll take your word for it. :) I ended up modifying the menu structure to work around this issue and think I'll leave it as is.
