I would like to make the recent Activities module width smaller, i have used firebug and other css viewers but cant seem to locate the the correct code?

Activity stream is not a module, to begin with.
You can alter its size by changing the span class in the
ROOT/components/com_community/templates/default/frontpage.index.php
