Photo uploading and image gallery issue

ISSUE SUMMARY:
Dear Forum,

After updating JS (and the theme) to the latest versions I have several problems with photo uploads.
I am not sure what is causing this conflict but I was wondering if more people encouter these types of problems?
Before the update the photo uploads were working correctly.

  1. Photo uploads get stuck and the page doesn't 'forward' to the just uploaded image. (They so seem to get uploaded)
  2. Photo's in any of the albums I try to set to 'use as avatar' give a blank page. After going back to the profile it does have changed the avatar image.

I am running into these problems after updating to the latest version of both JF Social template and JomSocial component.
STEPS TO REPLICATE:
1 Login to dev (or live) site
2 Change avatar image
3 *Page gets stuck
4 Chose any image from user profile album to 'set as avatar'
5 *Blank page

Error 500 pops up when I try to upload a photo on stream.
This indicates server error:

Please, contact with your hosting provider and ask for server error log.

- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.
