bug fix for Joomla 3.6 not working

I replaced the core.php file as per:

Now my entire dev site is blank, busy restoring the original file now.

I turned or error reporting and I get this error:

Also I am not on the latest version of jomsocial:

You are currently running on an older version of JomSocial.
Version installed: 4.1.6
Latest version available: 4.2.2

Will this have anything to do with my issue?

Thank you for contacting us and reporting this issue.
Yes, patch should be used with latest version of JomSocial.
So I recommend to roll back Joomla! upgrade, then upgrade JomSocial to 4.2.2 and upgrade Joomla! again.
Then apply patch from here: www.jomsocial.com/forum/installation/340...owing-anymore#164512

- Instead of saying: 'it's not working', explain the problem in detail.
- Screenshots with the URL visible in them and the problem marked are more than welcome.
- Tell us how to replicate the problem, we can't fix it if we can't find it.
- Make sure that your site/server meets JomSocial System Requirements
- Make sure to setup JomSocial Cron Job
- Always provide us with access details to the backend and ftp. We need it to debug problems.
- If you have a similar problem, but a solution you found isn't working, open a new thread instead of 'merging' with an existing one.
