On my site, when first user creates a private group, second user can see the group and click on request button to join.
First user:
- Receives a request from second user to join group in NOTIFICATIONS (small globe in menubar)
- Receives a request within the group that a user is waiting to get access
- Receives a request by mail
- DOES NOT receive a message about waiting request on the site on "pending invitations"

Is this correct? Where is "pending invitations" used for?

Where is "pending invitations" used for?
Pending invitations are for the member who is invited by someone to Joi a group but he is yet to make the reply on it.
For example, I invited you to Join a group so you will this invitation in Pending invitations.

Okay, so it's not the other way around: when I aks permission to join a group, it is not visible on site?

When you ask to Join a group, it goes as a notification but Pending invitations as for user, as someone requested him to join the group as an invitation that is pending.
It works this way.
