Preparing your community for JomSocial 2.6

For the time being, I am reposting some quick notes that were first published a few months ago during the release of JomSocial 2.4. This guide holds much relevance to most if not all upgrade attempts for a Joomla website, hence the need for a round of reminder to ensure that such major upgrade will be smooth and safe.
Upgrading JomSocial has always been a simple matter of uninstalling the older JomSocial version and then installing the shiny, new and polished JomSocial 2.6.
But hold your horses, dear friends! A responsible community manager will always follow a strict standard operating procedure before a major update is done to the website. The following steps form basic guidelines that we abide religously while upgrading any site of ours. You may tweak it to suit your needs, requirements and system configuration.

The release of JomSocial 2.6 has been rescheduled to be on 26th of March 2012, Monday.
This decision has been made as we found out that certain parts of JomSocial 2.6 should be much faster than it currently is.
Balancing performance and features is always a delicate matter, most especially in an organic community deployed using JomSocial because we have to consider a multitude of possible system setups and configurations that JomSocial runs on. There are a lot of cases whereby requested features are simply way to advance to be handled by a shared or VPS environment. Apart from performance, scalability is also high in the equation. -

We had the most pleasant surprise last weekend subsequently after the release of the first JomSocial 2.6 Release Candidate. Our development site and this particular blog were visited by thousands of visitors in a matter of hours, with a surge of download activity that almost choke the unoptimized secondary server for the development site. Luckily for us, the little server proved to be a tough nut.
Putting the features to the limit
We thought all was well, but we were wrong. Soon after the release of RC One was announced, we began to receive reports of download failures with no clear cause nor replicatable procedure for us to simulate the download error. Some were using Chrome, we were also using Chrome. Some were having problems with Firefox, we have none. Some say IE worked, while other browsers failed. Some say clearing the cache works, some say nada. Some say he's terrified of ducks, and his blood is blue.. but all we know is he's called the Stig. We were dumbfounded, especially realising the the new file upload is one of the most awaited features in JomSocial 2.6. We marched on, and did some more load test and boy it was fruitful. We found out that while the download feature works fine on an average community site, it however could fail should hundreds or thousands of users attempt to access the file simultenously.

JomSocial 2.6 RC One, good news in a package

The first RC version of JomSocial 2.6 is now available (download link at the end of this article). The amount of hours, spilled coffee and littered pizza boxes that have been sacrificed into making this release compatible with numerous extensions and templates out there is massive!
YooTheme Warp templates + Zoo CCK + WidgetKit compatibility
First of all, we have updated our jQuery library to work hand in hand with the popular and highly versatile Widgetkit tools from Yootheme. In older versions of JomSocial, enabling any JomSocial-related modules on the same page with WidgetKit-enabled articles would cause the javascript library to crash. This would also affect Zoo CCK (Content Construction Kit) articles and numerous Warp-based Joomla templates distributed by Yootheme. Our hearts broke knowing about this clash in JomSocial 2.4. Good news is, these potential clashes have all been fixed once and for all! If you are using WidgetKit, Zoo or any of the nicely done Warp-based templates from Yootheme, rest assured that these clashes are a thing of the past. -

We are honored to be part of the Joomla ecosystem, a shining beacon of light in mostly disorganized domain of Content Management Systems. All good criteria people most associate in a good system is there, speed, reliability, security, extensibility and community.
Community is the keyword. While some other open source management systems may boast some of the criteria, little actually have a well-organized and strong community behind it. The Joomla ecosystem is a robust network of code contributors, extension developers, users, and template developers who have colored and shaped this once a reborn of Mambo CMS into a now highly successful and most used CMS on the planet. Yes, you heard it right. JomSocial 2.4.2 is fully compatible with Joomla 2.5 without needing any update or compatibility patch.
The JomSocial Team would like to congratulate the Joomla Development Team and the awesome Community behind it for delivering the latest iteration of the world’s most popular open source content management system.For your information, Joomla 2.5 is intended to be an LTS (a Long Term Support) version, which will be kept updated through October, 2013. It is a polished gem, a fusion of updates in Joomla 1.6 and Joomla 1.7 that are finally merged into an LTS tree.

2.4 Beta is Out on Friday!
Whats up? We know a lot of you loyal fans who can't wait for the NEW JomSocial have been asking about our 2.4 release. Guess what? The date is nearing. Some may ask,”Why does it take so long?” Well, this is because we want to make sure that you will experience JomSocial 2.4 in its most stable form. With this, you can spend more time nurturing your users and building up content. This is what a cool social network should be about after all!
We currently have 6 alpha versions that has been rigorously tested by our valued testers! Don't take our word for it. Visit our beta forum here and check out the feedback.
Finally, we are releasing our final 2.4 BETA tomorrow which is on the 7th of October (yes it's Friday!). So dear testers, please bombard us with as many bug reports as possible.
The release of our 2.4 Stable depends on the quality of our beta phase which is sometime nearing the end of this month.

With the release of the first JomSocial 2.4 Alpha last August, we are now gearing up to present you with Alpha 4 next Friday, 23rd September 2011. Before getting your hands dirty with the Alpha version, let us enlighten you with the experiments that we have gone through and the outcome which were later made as the principal guideline in the development of the next major iterations of JomSocial, your favourite social networking platform.
Although seemingly young in age, the analytical and statistical information that we have amassed through our demo site, internal development lab, and our experience in building up the Joomla People Portal is so ginormous that it would easily dwarf the biggest of all dwarves. The accumulated information was then put under a thoughtful scrutiny before the eyes of the JomSocial team.
