With the release of Joomla 2.5 a few days ago, we begin to receive quite an influx of requests for guidance on migrating to Joomla 2.5 with JomSocial users and data intact. This tutorial will guide you with hopefully detailed steps on moving Joomla 1.5’s data into Joomla 2.5, and steps needed to safely transfer JomSocial users and data into the brand new site.
If you are not a JomSocial user and looking to only migrate Joomla 1.5, don’t worry, the following instructions are perfectly valid as once you have completed Part 6, the migration is complete.
We have tested 3 migration components listed in JED and will provide our findings for each of them. We are hoping that this guide will provide our dear users with a thorough and intimate understanding of how each migrator operates and choose the best option to suit your requirement.

Support Slowdown during New Lunar Year Celebration

The JomSocial Team will be observing the New Lunar Year / Chinese New Year celebration which falls on Monday, 23rd January 2012 until Tuesday, 24th January 2012. There will be a delay in support delivery starting this weekend until the abovementioned date.

The New Lunar Year is celebrated throughout Asia in countries with significant Chinese populations. In Malaysia, it is considered a major holiday and is celebrated by all of us irregardless of race and religion. Traditionally the family members roll up their sleeves to clean up the house to remove ill-fortunes and to make way for new luck. Family members will look forward to a family dinner feast which is organized on the Eve of New year while kids will be most gleeful the morning after, by getting pocketful of 'Ang-Pows'; money in red paper envelopes. In Malaysia, the celebration evolved into a colorful and elaborate maze of open-houses and nation-wide festivities. I personally cant wait to get my hands on those delicious, home-cooked dimsums. They are best when prepared with a bucketful of love. :) -

JomSocial Servers Down without Dyno
Early in the morning yesterday (Malaysian time), Syam(our server admin) was awaken by a downtime notification on JomSocial servers. He tried to connect and reboot the server manually but there was no response from the server, which is a rare case. We contacted RimuHosting and they informed us that they were having a power disruption on their servers and were working on it.
We received several complaints from our users especially from those who use version older than 2.2. In the older version of JomSocial, the update checker is set to check available update on JomSocial.com server. Since the server is down, it could not connect to our servers resulting to the slowdown. This issue is fixed in later versions. Besides, there was supposed to be a DNS fail-over that would redirect all requests to a backup server. Unfortunately, it didn't happen.

JomSocial Received Merit Award at MSC APICTA 2010
MSC Apicta 2010 award presentation ceremony was held yesterday at Hilton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. If you're wondering, Apicta stands for "Asia Pacific ICT Alliance" . In short, it is one of the most prestigious ICT awards in this side of the world, even more so in Malaysia where we are based on.
JomSocial was one of the finalist in the "e-Inclusion and e-Community" category. Meriza and I was there, representing JomSocial team. I have to give it to the organizer, they do know how to keep the event tense and exciting (with tacky background music!). Although I am generally indifference to most awards (I am more concern getting awards from YOU, our users!), it is exciting to watch the winner announced one by one from the 17 available categories.

Turbocharge Your Community with Email Marketing
irwan on Jul 16, 2010
Tagged in: plugins, open source community software, development, creating social networking sitesEmail is most probably older than Internet but as with Internet, it is still highly relevant today. Now, there are a lot of tools that might supersede email such as Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites that makes email look archaic. However, as old as it may seem, email is still a powerful communication tool. As an open source community software user, it will be even more useful.

JomSocial 1.7.15 Beta Available for Testing
After several months of development we are glad to report that JomSocial 1.7.15 is now available for beta testing. This is another milestone in JomSocial development to bring more features, stability, security and ease of use to your community. There are a lot of features planned for 1.8 Stable release but here are what we've got so far:
Events - Your community member will be able to use JomSocial as a platform to organize events. Events can be set as private or public and you can use RSVP system to organize the attendance.
Application reordering - Community members have different values for each application. This new feature will allow them to sort more important ones at the top and leave the rest at the bottom.
