Updated JomSocial templates are on the way!

Posted by: fuqaha

We are honored to be part of the Joomla ecosystem, a shining beacon of light in mostly disorganized domain of Content Management Systems. All good criteria people most associate in a good system is there, speed, reliability, security, extensibility and community.

Community is the keyword. While some other open source management systems may boast some of the criteria, little actually have a well-organized and strong community behind it. The Joomla ecosystem is a robust network of code contributors, extension developers, users, and template developers who have colored and shaped this once a reborn of Mambo CMS into a now highly successful and most used CMS on the planet. Joomla, we love you!

JomSocial itself could never as healthy without the continued support of fellow extension and template developers. As with any modular system, there are bound to be some incompatibilities from time to time, but on-going development talks among developers manage to overcome this.

As a token of appreciation from our part, we have crafted a plan to update popular Joomla templates to be compatible with the upcoming JomSocial 2.6. The first outcome of this endeavour can be seen in our Joomlart Development site. The good looking JA Social template has been updated with several new JomSocial 2.6 features, boy it sure looks neat!

About Joomlart : Joomlart-JomSocial Development site

Next on the list are Rockettheme RT Tachyon and several other Gantry-based templates. We have developed a particular fondness for Gantry templates by making it the default template at our main development site as our inspection reveals a large number of JomSocial users utilize Rocketheme’s smart templates.

About RocketTheme : RocketTheme-JomSocial Development site

Several Joomla templates from Gavick will also see some compatibility updates for JomSocial 2.6. Over the years, we saw some very nicely done overrides for JomSocial that would be a colossal waste should they were left not updated for the upcoming JomSocial 2.6. We will do our best to get the TWN 2, Music and Musicity ready!

We have also received some reports in our development forum that some new features in JomSocial 2.6 do not behave well in Yootheme templates. We are currently looking at these reports and updates will sure follow.

Do us a favour! What is your favourite Joomla template?

Hi, how do you guys identify users' real geo-location? I am testing Geoxies webservice now, but I am not sure I installed it correctly or not. Does anyone know how to use their API?

I'd like to see Gavick Quay updated -- they have officially stopped supporting it. Too bad there isn't a way to code jomsocial in such a way that it would just inheret joomla's template for everything... then we wouldn't have to be dependent on template devs for updates of old, outdated templates and could easily upgrade to a new template when desired without requiring a massive investment in redesign every time, and your developers wouldn't have to do the same so that old templates are now usable again. But Jomsocial would almost be too perfect, then ;-)

I agree, JomSocial's template system is lacking. We need a system similar to that of Joomla where it allows easy formatting of the template through an installer and controllable parameters in the backend. No more of this waiting for developers to update to the latest JomSocial stable release and hoping that they do not miss something.

I most want to see a minimal fast loading template, no special effects and not too many image files.

I've just switched to the AgilesDev template (http://www.development.theagiles.com), and am LOVING it. It's built on top of the default template and picks up almost everything from the default, yet it adds some awesome functionality. It shows the user tools on the left side, and these switch intelligently depending on what page the user is viewing. My favorite feature is that it shows the About Me section in full page width separate from the activities. If you are someone's friend, you see Activities, and if you are not you see About Me (similar to FB, but easier).

This is the kind of template that should come standard with JomSocial!

We have set up YooTheme template here:
developers.jomsocial.com/yootheme

and yes, noticeable clash with the various jQuery files. Our developers are taking a look to make sure YooTheme, WidgetKit and JomSocial get along well.

Would love to see some support for http://www.joomforest.com/
They boast one of the most advanced JomSocial Templates yet with stunning effects and great style. Not only is the template at the top of the charts but they have developed unique modules to accompany JomSocial such as their toolbar.

Demo: http://demo.joomforest.com/j17/jf_chrome/jomsocial.html

Thanks,
James
