Preview of upcoming JomSocial 2.0

Yes, you heard it right. This is a sneak preview of JomSocial 2.0.  I know most of you have been waiting for this list and to be really honest with you, the list of changes is too long for me to blog about it. So here's what I am going to do, I will summarize it into some of the major features that will be incorporated with a couple of screen shots to go with it.

  • Multiple profile system
This is one of the major feature that will be included in the next release. Yes, users can now select their profile types which the site admin has already predefined from the back end. As a site administrator, you can also restrict group creations by different profile types.

  • Global Invitation System
The current invitation system that you seen in versions prior to 2.0, has been revamped from scratch. These enhancements will improve user's experience and it will definitely also increase the interactions on the site. Compared to the older invitation system, it is much more interactive and it goes very easy on the eyes.

Further to that, the new Global Invitation system will now feature an easy to call API which allows 3rd party developers to easily have invitations in their own application.

  • Members listing!
Yes, this is what you requested for and we have thrown it in! What you get out of this new member listing? It allows site administrator to save a specific search result as a menu item on the site. How does this work? Really simple, perform a search through the advance search that is already built into JomSocial and if you are happy with the results, save the search with your desired title and menu position and walla! you are done! The menu will automatically be created by JomSocial and users can access these listings.

  • Like a.k.a Rating System
We have received quite a number of requests from users to include a proper rating or like plugin. The like system allow members from the site to like or dislike a photo.

  • More Administrative configurations
In JomSocial 2.0, a site administrator has more controls over the member. They are also allowed to modify a user's vanity URL , configure which page it should redirect to upon logging in, disable profile videos feature , more template parameters and many more.

  • Group Events
Events was a big hit in JomSocial 1.8.x where we introduced a new Event feature which allows site member to create events. What we have for you in 2.0 is the ability to create events for groups.

There are plenty of refinements in 2.0 and some of the other features which I can't list all of them here also includes:

  • Profile thumbnail cropping
  • Enhanced caching system
  • More back end controls
  • Subcategory support with Event and Groups
  • Image rotations
  • Event importing from ICal
  • and many more...

If you are already a registered member, you can automatically join us for beta testing which will be posted in the forums, http://jomsocial.com/forum . We will announce the availability in the beta forums once a beta is available.

P/S: Beta releases and upgrades are only available for customers who have subscriptions with us. If you do not yet have a subscription with us you can purchase it here, http://jomsocial.com/buy-now.html

I've also noticed that the information displayed in the user profiles doesn't show up properly. Each field simply displays a single letter, most commonly T and S??

So far from what I was expecting, I'm quite disopointed that 2.0 has been released whilst still being so buggy. This is slowing down my project.

Hi Paul! I would inform you that the problem you're noticing, is a Template problem. Have you installed any "external" template? If so, enable one of internal template to solve your problem.

I'm using Blueface ... So basically, 2.0 doesn't work with older templates?

November 25, 2010
mmmhh, it's very strange: I was using "ooopa_ice" template on version 1.8 (an external template); when I upgraded to version 2.0, I had the same problem. I solved this problem using Bluface template (or any others "internal" template).
Now if I try to reload "ooopa_ice" template, each profile's field displays a single letter; then now I'm using Blueface template.
Try using other templates, "default" first of all

Hi ... 'm just starting to implement JomSocial 2.0 now. I notice a bug already; The Search on Video and Events section appears by default and distorts the layout. This shouldn't show initially unless it doesn't interfere with the layout.

Is there any way I can correct this?

GREAT WORK!!!!!
one question concerning multiple profiletypes:
is there a way to select the profiletypes directly via a link.
Example:
users, who want to register as a biker:
website/register_biker.html
users, who want to register as a racer:
website/register_racer.html

that would be so great!
Keep on the good work!

The most interesting and useful updates as always have not been implemented.

These are just minor updates of very little thing.

It 'no use to create different user profiles if you do not you get a chance to diversify what then they can see or do.

This looks very nice.

The multiple profiles is very promising. It looks like it's built for different users so that individuals can be different to companies or organisations. It could be a way for JomSocial to have 'Pages' like Facebook!

If the admin created a profile for a music venue or a gallery, then the special profile could create events for that venue!!

this is a great idea and some people wished for that (me too). but until now this is not included in jomsocial and I remember a forum post from the jomsocial team that they don't want to be a facebook clone... so don't have too much hope for that in next time

November 02, 2010
come on, this is what we need - an integrated activity stream. let's be honest, everyone has a FB account these days, and when people sign up on our niche social sites, they expect the activity stream to work the same, or similar so I have everyone trying to embed videos, or photos on the stream all they get is an ugly url... I believe jomsocial is a nice piece of software but as of now it needs to be more integrated.. how can we expect people to interact when the components on the software don't even interact each other?

I believe, photos, videos, status updates, and comments should be all be facilitated in one place, it does not matter how you accomplish that, call it FB cloning, or reinvent the wheel with your own ideas, but as long as these features are not integrated, I believe jomsocial will lack serving its purpose..... which is bring people together
Omar Al-Ansari
Omar Al-Ansari
November 14, 2010
I do agree with above .. Its not cloning a software but actually picking up where others have left and not start from scratch.

This would actually make the profile look better rather than now having two large piece of applications taking up a huge space.

I hope it is not only Mark (from Jomsocial) who reads these comments.

When you read all comments it is clear that most of current customers are not happy about development of Jomsocial.

Not everybody is exited about "Multiple Profiles".
Why dont you guys fix and improve what you already have build ????

I use Jomsocial since day one (I also use MyBlog, JomComments ) my major issues with Jomsocial are:

* performance
* messy template
* messy css

Not sure how about for others but for me above points are crucial for running successful web site.

Not to mention PHP errors. And no updates for MyBlog and JomComments - they'r not even proper integrated with Jomsocial.

You must be making some serious money (Iam happy for you that you have manage this with your extension no question about that ) so why not work more with community, get more developers and more support staff and offer better value for our money.

To run your components on one site cost like licence of well known operating system! not to mention the need to renew subscription every year to stay up to date.

Please sit down, have a coffee and think about all of us who paid you hard earned cash.

Thanks your customer

October 22, 2010
What about subscriptions????
Right now 3 party integrations suck, complicated, bunch of errors, lack of support, etc. Feels like you guys are running around the bush with mediocre and ridicule upgrades and new implementations. At least that's my opinion. AGAIN THIS IS MY OPINION.
You guys are actively making money with jomsocial sales, your partners are making money selling components, modules, plugins and other ridiculous php that just basically crashes joomla and creates huge php error logging.
Why can't the people that support you and buy all this make some money also?????
Also have you checked your release notes recently...

Conclusion:
- 1.8.0 to 1.8.10 how many basic bugs have you fixed?? clearly not a stable product. Have you activated your php logging in php.ini? have you checked jomsocial php warnings and errors? have you checked the php erros of the components and modules of your publicized partners???? DOES ANYONE CHECK THIS?
- No subscriptions in 2.0
- Because of the above reasons, jomsocial is a BIG NO NO for me.
P.s. lol I'm just a normal joomla user looking for a community application and I do not work for CB.

I totally agree with Sinisa. There are now 10 versions from 1.8 and also the previous versions came more than one time, so there are always bugs or like other say "jomsocial is a beta at all". Do you really think when you wait another week your product is bug-free? Ok, if it is then I'll be quiet and will wait for that. But I don't think this will happen and so I don't understand why you don't give out a beta and let us all help?! I need to ask this again because I want to purchase Jomsocial and get started. Please Mark Lee...can you give me an answer?

I am using Joomla 1.6 beta 11. Most features of the new Joomla 1.6 already works fine and my site is online. Is there any way I can start my work with Jomsocial 2.0. A beta of Jomsocial 2.0 is no problem. I want to get started with customization and learn the backend and upgrade as soon as stable versions come out. This way I have a running system by 2011. Does 2.0 work with Joomla 1.6 or can I use it standalone in any way to begin with?

One big thing I was hoping that would happen in this release is some front end performance updates. Initial download file size is already almost 1MB, for a simple web page. How about trying to reduce the download time?

Also the CSS selectors are so long it's painful to go through them.

We are actually planning to create a 'download-able' lightweight template which can be used for customizations. It is much more structured but we can't really use it as the default template for now as it will only cause more conflicts with 3rd party templates.
