The past few weeks have been a very productive period for us. With the release of the first JomSocial 2.4 Alpha last August, we are now gearing up to present you with Alpha 4 next Friday, 23rd September 2011. Before getting your hands dirty with the Alpha version, let us enlighten you with the experiments that we have gone through and the outcome which were later made as the principal guideline in the development of the next major iterations of JomSocial, your favourite social networking platform.

Although seemingly young in age, the analytical and statistical information that we have amassed through our demo site, internal development lab, and our experience in building up the Joomla People Portal is so ginormous that it would easily dwarf the biggest of all dwarves. The accumulated information was then put under a thoughtful scrutiny before the eyes of the JomSocial team.

We are excited to announce that the most anticipated JomSocial 2.2 Nueve has been released. This is the ninth major release for JomSocial, hence we named it Nueve(Spanish for nine).
So what's the biggest thing in 2.2? No doubt it's Joomla 1.6 compatibility. Many of our users have been waiting to pair up the best social networking tool with Joomla 1.6. We are glad to report that you can now deploy JomSocial 2.2 on Joomla 1.6 without any problem!

JomSocial 1.6 codename Brillo is finally here!. We've worked long and hard on this release, adding new features and refining the product to make a faster, streamlined... just plain better JomSocial. And we think you will agree, this version rocks!
So what's new about JomSocial 1.6, erm, Brillo? Well, for starters, we have resolved over 170 minor issues that were logged in our internal issue tracking system. You can view the complete change log here, but let me briefly highlight some of JomSocial Brillo's exciting new features:

We have been working on a new addon which will allow site administrators to easily upgrade without having the pain of making backups and searching for codes they have added / changed. This new addon will compare against the checksum of each files and based on the checksums generated, it will then make a backup for you! Yes, you no longer need to back them up yourself ;) However, this will only work with JomSocial 1.6 and above as the addon will need to compare against the checksum that is generated from each build.

Over the last 1 week, early build of JomSocial has already reach our customers. We have launched a pre-release sales since the 18th November with overwhelming responses. For this pre-release, the purchase link were made available, only to our existing customers and those who subscribed for our JomSocial newsletter. I did repeatedly remind everyone to sign up with our newsletter, didn't I ?
Why a pre-release and not just make it available ?. The simple truth is, we are short on staff and would be unable to handle too many customers at the same time. The automated purchase system were not 100% tested at the time and we wanted to be sure that it will run without a hitch. We were also testing a new forum-based support system to see if we will be able to provide an excellent level of support. Not having to deal with thousands of people at one time, at this moment, allow us to tweak our system for maximum efficiency.

Finally, we reach the next stage of our development, public access to our development site!!
For some of you, you might already have access to this site. It isn't really a very well kept secret, but we never publish it. Keeping it secret-ish helps us to tweak certain things while slowly adding new user to test the system. As the number of user increases, we could slowly monitor the system for any performance issues and address them as we go along.
There are still a couple of things that need to be done and we would still tweak a few things before the actual release and you might still see some major enhancement on the final release.

I was away yesterday attending Singapore Google DevFest. Aside from getting a misspelled t-shirt, we manage to get a rough overview of all Google developer tools and API. It does gives us some new idea on how we can make use of some Google services within our products.
I also took the opportunity to give a short talk about JomSocial in front of Google engineers and to around 150 over participants there. Nothing fancy, just a quick overview of some of our features.
It cause a little stir among those who knew Joomla. We get the typical questions such as, when will it be available, how different it is compared to some of our competitors.
Anyway, it was a fun day, and I am really sorry that those folks in Singapore get the first public presentation on JomSocial
