With the release of Joomla 2.5 a few days ago, we begin to receive quite an influx of requests for guidance on migrating to Joomla 2.5 with JomSocial users and data intact. This tutorial will guide you with hopefully detailed steps on moving Joomla 1.5’s data into Joomla 2.5, and steps needed to safely transfer JomSocial users and data into the brand new site.

If you are not a JomSocial user and looking to only migrate Joomla 1.5, don’t worry, the following instructions are perfectly valid as once you have completed Part 6, the migration is complete.

We have tested 3 migration components listed in JED  and will provide our findings for each of them. We are hoping that this guide will provide our dear users with a thorough and intimate understanding of how each migrator operates and choose the best option to suit your requirement.

Requirements

1. The website must be at least on Joomla 1.5.21 (the minimum version that JomSocial supports)

2. A running JomSocial 2.4.2 or above (optional, if you wish to migrate JomSocial data)

3. An instance of Apache running locally / in localhost. The easiest method would be having XAMPP installed.

We initiate this migration experiment by utilizing jUpgrade.  jUpgrade is a popular migrator which has helped many to move from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 1.6/1.7 not so long ago. It is frequently mentioned in numerous Joomla migration articles, in the Joomla Community blog, and also within the official Joomla Wiki.

Yes, you heard it right. JomSocial 2.4.2 is fully compatible with Joomla 2.5 without needing any update or compatibility patch.

The JomSocial Team would like to congratulate the Joomla Development Team and the awesome Community behind it for delivering the latest iteration of the world’s most popular open source content management system.

For your information, Joomla 2.5 is intended to be an LTS (a Long Term Support) version, which will be kept updated through October, 2013. It is a polished gem, a fusion of updates in Joomla 1.6 and Joomla 1.7 that are finally merged into an LTS tree.

The JomSocial Team will be observing the New Lunar Year / Chinese New Year celebration which falls on Monday, 23rd January 2012 until Tuesday, 24th January 2012. There will be a delay in support delivery starting this weekend until the abovementioned date.

The New Lunar Year is celebrated throughout Asia in countries with significant Chinese populations. In Malaysia, it is considered a major holiday and is celebrated by all of us irregardless of race and religion. Traditionally the family members roll up their sleeves to clean up the house to remove ill-fortunes and to make way for new luck. Family members will look forward to a family dinner feast which is organized on the Eve of New year while kids will be most gleeful the morning after, by getting pocketful of 'Ang-Pows'; money in red paper envelopes. In Malaysia, the celebration evolved into a colorful and elaborate maze of open-houses and nation-wide festivities. I personally cant wait to get my hands on those delicious, home-cooked dimsums. They are best when prepared with a bucketful of love. :)

One of our awesome partners has released a clean, business friendly and JomSocial- compatible template called IT Community. It's also their first built Social Template that features JomSocial integration!

The JomSocial team is proud to announce the first Alpha release of the upcoming JomSocial 2.6.

This Alpha One package signals the completion of Internal Notification and Recurring event feature. We need your help in verifying the integrity of implemented features and as such, please only concentrate on these two major features. Shoot us with as many issues that you have found as possible. Do refrain from commenting on other parts of JomSocial yet as we are actively developing them right now.

It has been a while since we last updated this blog with JomSocial development progress.

Some may recall our previous JomSocial 2.4 blog posts which introduced the groundwork for quite a number of exciting features in upcoming versions of JomSocial. Some may remember our long term mission of improving content discovery to celebrate user-generated content, making them easier to be found and act upon; which will directly liven up your social niche. Some may also remember several highly voted feature requests in Uservoice have been marked as Started/Under Progress.

Gavick has just released a new JomSocial-compatible template for Joomla named Music. Music is for those who fancy building a good looking social networking website.
