Some Design Ideas

Posted by: azrul

I just wanted to share with you some of our ideas that didn't make it to the final build. We have tons of ideas and out talented designer occasionally come up with some ideas just for fun. Many of these work never get out of our hard-disk, but I think, what the heck, lets just show them to everyone.

In this design, notice that there are a few profile picture that visitor can view. Recent activities can also be filtered by time. Profile status can be commented on and a longer version of the status update is also available.

This is an idea for the generic "browse members" page. Action such as add as friend and write message is group together in a nice bar. Each profile also includes location information and when the status update was updated.

We have this idea of a collapsible photo gallery view, where with a mouseover or a click, you can view additional information regarding a photo album.

Another idea for the profile page. Here, photo gallery and the wall take a center-stage and the recent activities sit on the sidebar.

Another concept for the profile page.

Some of the mockups for the group page. Notice that each category has nice icons to it.

Anyway, if you guys have a nice sketch for us, pass it over and we'll be happy to discuss it. :)

@Azrul: you keep saying that designs like this would cause CSS conflicts, but I'm afraid I don't accept that!

If the problem you're experiencing is a template's CSS overriding the JomSocial styles then all you need to do is ensure that the JS sheets are forced to load last (replacing the more generic selectors) - this is something that can be easily be accomplished with either PHP or Ajax.

Perhaps you'd like to explain in detail exactly what the problem is that's stopping designs like these seeing the light of day (especially when they're so much nicer than the current default selection)? Get into the GPL spirit early - I'm sure somebody will be able to offer a solution that will make the sky the limit for future releases!

Well, if you really want to learn, in less than a month you can make wonders with css.
The mockups from images there shows nothing revolutionary.
Last few days, ive been playing with 1.8 templates, and already came up with the 3-column design, added some fancy JQuery widgets et cetera
And all that by reading HOWTO's with an ability to google

Gladly it looks like prothemer team is working on the new template for 1.8. I Like Azrul designs and UI but i think its good to make this kind of collaboration in the pros.

Hope Azrul someday will make the same kind of client communication like Chris from Prothemer does.

I realize you never released these because of potential CSS conflicts, etc. that would become support issues. Why not release them as unsupported? That way some of us could work to refine.

So instead this you decided that is best to implement that default bullshit design in which you changed almost nothing ? Why ?

Like I explain earlier, the css conflict with huge numbers of 3rd party component would be unmanageable, hence we had to simplify it. You are free to implement any design ideas in your own installation. I just show you what is possible...

But why not release them "unsupported" so developers could implement them for their individual installations and clients? I still don't understand why you would not let your paying customers benefit from the work that you've already produced. Those are very nice layouts and every one of them improves something.

Since devs are not typically also graphic artists/designers... ;)

ummm let's please not forget that while the default template is uninspiring at best, it IS still much more attractive and functional than anything we've seen out of the box from Community Builder, Joomunity, or any of the other lame attempts at building a community solution for Joomla! JomSocial reigns supreme!

just because the level of expectation and competition is low doesn't mean we should settle for slightly better than the competition. I agree JomSocial is much much better, but it has to be since it's commercial and competes with decent free alternatives. The great layouts from the images above would kill the competition and end the contest right then. Instead we make do with the lowest common denominator so it's most compatible. I definitely understand the reasons for that, but there really needs to be a few premium templates that capable JomSocial customers can use to create premium JomSocial sites.

Wow looks great :)

Just 1 thing i would love to see a plugin system in profile page just like (com-builder)but then simple. For example assign different profile plug ins to different positions in profile page...

First position * right
Second position center * tabs
Third position * left
Fourth position * center

In joomla backend we only have to assign a for example friends plugin to a position and then it shows in that position in profile...

For example plugins that are not so imporant in the tabs section in profile page...

Just a idea but i hope it will be possible in jomsocial for joomla 1.6

I think it will be perfect. and one more thing there must be also a share button that when user click on it must share it to all friends and shown in their profile especially under the videos like facebook

It would be fantastic if you could implement any of these design ideas in your next release! Especially the Browse People, Photos, and the Profile view (photo 4) - all would be excellent upgrades for the JomSocial package.

I really like the picture with the wall in the center. In Holland we have a social community site called Hyves which is really huge in Holland and the wall is also there the main used item which is in the center. Friends stay in touch through the wall and therefore it should have a more prominent position with no apps under it.

Keep up the good work!

nice ones!! but i dont get it .. Azrul is saying that those features never made it to the final versiob but at the same time they are so hard to implement and fit in our templates .. so whats gonna happen Azrul ? are you guys planning to relase those templates ? or they are just ideas.. but for sure the designers are good!

You may customize the template to get your application tab. With some css/javascript skill, it should be doable within a few hours or less

So when it's such an easy task, why isn't it implemented?
There is no question that tabbed applications are much more better then a 12 feed scroll list.

Azrul, i mean it serious, i think especially you tested every other community more then us, did you ever saw such an unhandy scroll list?

I can confirm that it's definitely possible to add the apps to tabs. I've done it for many clients. I've made an expand-all/collapse-all button set that will open/close all the apps at once for ease of navigation. I've also separated each app into it's own tab. Unfortunately there are several problems with doing it however that make most people chose not to.

1. there are many profile plugins that have FLASH in them, and if you default one of the accordions or tabs to be closed upon page load, that has FLASH in it, the flash will not render properly when the tab is selected or the accordion is expanded. Not sure why this is but it happens with nearly every flash based app including friends location, google maps, hwdvideoshare, and others.

2. if you use tabs for each application, and have a site where a member might have 15-20 applications in their profiles, the tabs end up not wrapping properly to a second row or get cut off at the end. I've tested with every javascript library to accomplish this and it will only work nicely with a single row of only 8-10 tabs at most. And even then the app names need to be super short for them to fit on tabs at all.

February 19, 2010
I have to second Harmony's request. Making applications separable by app-id is essential to creating unique templates.

I'd like to have the mutual friends app by social code displaying in one of the new module positions above the friends display. I think there's also a favorite friends app that would go nicely there.

And than of course being able to have the wall in its own tab, and separating other different kinds of apps so profiles don't become bogged down.

This feature is a major one, there's no doubt about that.

February 21, 2010
In future release, you should be able to load application into any module position. We really have to see if it makes sense. It might be limited to plugin itself if they want to support it.

Ah cool. Glad to hear its being worked on. Maybe a handle like onBeforeAppLoad, to call the app somewhere else before its loaded into $content

Just one route. The thing is, by loading it into a module position, we also would possibly need to hide it from $content.

February 19, 2010
Some of the more complicated design will be significantly harder to fit with thousands of other Joomla template out there. The css conflict that we will face will be enormous, hence, we normally ends up with simplified version.

However, it should gives you some idea what the template system is capable of, if you somehow want to implement these ideas yourself.

Thanks Azrul

Thats the spirit, altough you may never release this ideas this talk to your clients/comunity is very positive.

Keep up on this track please.

I like what i see on this post, dont get me wrong, and i hope this kind of layout/features get implemented soon.
The think i would like most in the short term from your team would be:
Focus on fine tunning the current set of features of JS (things like edit buttons/performance optimization, layout details) and the development of MB and JC

Would love to see your thought on this, this kind of public posts should be a 2 way communication.
Thanks
