Location, Location, Location

I would like to post a quick update on the upcoming JomSocial 1.8. One of more interesting things about it is that it will be location-aware! We have worked hard to build a very easy to use, geo-location and mapping API right into JomSocial. Our location support will allow our plugins, or any 3rd party plugins to easily display maps, validate any address or perform radius search! Developing location-aware plugins will be a snap!
For example, if a valid address is specified in your newly created event (hint!), a Google map will be automatically displayed. You can also search if there is any new event, within say, 20 miles from where you are currently located. If you are a developer, you can then write a plugin that will email all site members who are within certain distance from where the event will be!
Application developers can also utilize our new API to make their apps location-aware. All they need to do is simply implement our geo-location class interface within their objects. Internally, all social objects within JomSocial will have support for location awareness!!

I think we'll need some integration with other components as well - how about JReviews?
is there any ETA on the 1.8 release. I know there is a cycle, but in software development it's quite common to have delays.
Or is there a dev. version that can be downloaded via svn or something?
thanks
Ensure that you have VIP status in our forum, then you will be able to view a private Beta Testers forum. Download the latest Beta there.
The release cycle is 4 months though when i subscribed it was 3 :)
When it comes to updates, i would expect a lot of new features in 1.8 because we already had one polishing in 1.5 to 1.6 transition plus few additional bugfix 1.6 releases, so having another would be an insult to subscribers (remember the release cycle)
Furthermore i would love to see better templating system which will allow 3pd providers a greater freedom in creating custom designs
Unfortunatelly, i had to remove MyBlog and JoomComments from mine installation, because, other components works better with Jomsocial, which is sad. I honestly thought these 3 will play better as a team
"Unfortunatelly, i had to remove MyBlog and JoomComments from mine installation, because, other components works better with Jomsocial, which is sad. I honestly thought these 3 will play better as a team " do you mean they are not compatible, I see this uses jom comments so myblog works with jomcomments. I think some people have managed to get it working.
Other component did all of this thing out of the box.
Myblog is another story.
Its integrated quite well, although you can find a mile long activity streams if you enable this integration, but its interface is rather confusing for many users at least in mine case so i had to replace it.
You have a software, and you do not want to finish this to work 100%. Why?????
Blog these days is a must.
And a blog, which works with Joomla and activity stream of JomSocial and comments is a full winner.
Why not to use it??
* at first core feature should be improved!
JomSocial as stand alone community offers nothing very special. For 300usd Dolphin have 10x more features.
The only (and very great!) strenght of JomSocial is a fact, that it is integrated with Joomla. And this should be used to maximum!
(Do not forget: every sucessfull community is comments + photos + videos + discussions)
You say: JomSocial is integrated with Joomla. And ask yourself a question - how this integration works in life?
1. Joomla articles + activity stream working 100%?
2. Joomla articles + comments + Activity Stream working 100%?
3. Adding JomSocial photos to articles working 100%?
4. Adding JomSocial videos to articles working 100%?
In my opinion this should be done in first place!
JomSocial strenght is in 100% integration Joomla, not in super features.
Azrul team, use your strenght and improve this integration!
1)Regarding location-awareness: GREAT! That´s what a lot of people discussed in the forums. This is a substantial need, that also some extension developers have an eye on.
2)Regarding further needs for Photos/ Albums:
As you can see in forums, there is a strong need for categories within to sort the albums.
3) A better photo search-function including tags/location/category is needed.
I once was hoping that Azrul and his team were creating Jomsocial with the idea of having the best integration with their already existing components. But now I have to upgrade Jomsocial all the time - to which I have made lots of customizations - to get features that are of no use for me as I want to establish some kind of discussion community with heavy use of Myblog and Jomcomment.
Please think about that ...
Yes, updated for myblog and jomcomment is a little slower than i would like, but for JomComment, you're using it right now and I hope you like its direction.
Kind regards,
Don
Location is good, I'm sure everybody has no qualms about this new feature. But can we straighten the priority? What about improvements to GROUPS?
But i do also think that other core areas like the photo gallery and PM system need to be further improved first!
These are still without many settings and features and really not up to scratch with what social networks require.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, I do appreciate it. Yes, i do feel that the photo gallery system in Jomsocial still needs more usability and a few more features. I dont want to compare, but SIMgallery (which basically copied facebook albums) is alot more user friendly. Great to hear about the profile pic selection coming up in 1.8, but what about a gallery of past profile pics, ability to rotate images once uploaded, ability to reorder images once uploaded, better tagging usability (at present it isnt great), core activity stream improvements for gallery tagging eg showing when a user tags another user etc) users in album feature (like facebook), possible album sub-categories?, stats info of photos eg hits, downloads etc.
Also, PM system does need more options and features!! It is quite limited at the moment and is a struggle to manage a large community. Really need ability for users to be able to block certain users from sending messages to them, ability to attach files, also more of the features that UDDEIM currently has.
Hopefully, these ideas can be implemented sometime soon. :)
* photo rating.
Communieties are mostly about photos and videos, and such feature would in my opinion would be great.
Community is as good, as large traffic it generates, and photo rating will be such traffic booster.
Why?
1. People like to rate things - they feel that their voice matters, and that they are important ;). So they enter community and rate. Traffic is generated.
2. People like to see if their photos (art photos, event photos, girlfriend, dog, etc, etc.) are liked by others. So they enter community to check if something changed. Traffic is generated.
3. People like to publish better photos to get better ratings. Quality of community goes up. Traffic is generated.
And last , but definetly not least:
4. People like to look at best things, and worst things. (eg. "Top rated", "Most rated" , etc.). This is great feature, and easy can be two modules made. And agin - lots of traffic is generated.
Now my question: Is it possible to implement rating in next release, or rather not?
*Photo Resizer for Originals
*Drag&Drop Thumbnail Ordering
*Integration of Albums in MyBlog
*Connect Albums with Groups
*Albums of mny Friends Link
*Preview Album in Jomsocial Popup
...there are certainly more ideas from other ;-)
The uservoice is outdated and have been sampped.
For example recently, Alejandro asked his users to submit requests for the next release and to vote on them. He would then select and implement the Top-X depending on difficulty.
Requestes; availability to choose kilometres (slider?) from current adress, possiblity to choose other adress then "home adress", possilbity to publish childitems/attributes with geolocation in hierarchial structure (categories) - like events, but instead a store with events (the store is geolocalised and every event is connected to diffrent stores).
Keep upp the GJ!
