JomSocial Going GPL

Posted by: irwan

In keeping with our commitment to freedom, flexibility and openness, we are pleased to announce that the next version of JomSocial (1.8) will be completely 'open' and available under the GNU GPL license. We are confident that JomSocial users everywhere and the entire open source community will benefit greatly from this gesture and we're glad that we can fully align our hard work with the core values of Joomla and the open source community.
So, what does this change mean to our business model? Essentially, JomSocial is now subscription-based GPL software. Paying customers are now our VIP 'subscribers' and will have annual access to our latest builds, latest bug fixes and privileged access to our support forums. Nothing else changes.

Our valued customers, erm 'subscribers,' will still continue to receive our prompt customer support, regular JomSocial updates and our full commitment to growth & innovation--just as they are used to receiving.

And by going GPL, we are also allowing other developers around the world to view our code and offer their input on how we can make Jomsocial even better.

JomSocial, Joomla social extension, hopes this move will further strengthen the bond with the community, open up new possibilities and contribute to the growth of JomSocial and Joomla development.

I have a bigger question, why does JomSocial not make the necessary changes to make it easier for the user to use?

Like being able to comment on the main activity page? Update the activity stream when a user comments on a wall post? Move the wall on a users profile to the first item rather the last?

After using it for a year, hopelessly loosing faith in the product. We have 17K registered members on our site, but no one is talking because it is not intuitive.

Jomsocial, stop developing new things and fix the things you already built, please?

What are the benefits for someone who has just paid out for a five site licence?

As mentioned in my replies below, official support is only provided for subscribers. In your case, you will be able to receive support for all your 5 domains.
Plus, license holders will use a commercial variant for flowplayer which does not have watermark in them.

sorry, but whats the difference between the VIP subscribers and subscribers? One set pay for updates, one set doesn't??? Thats what you have said at least...

''VIP Subscribers will have ANNUAL access to our latest builds... etc"
"Subscribers will still continue to receive .... regular JomSocial updates"

Sorry, but there is no difference... no point of renewing my license if there are no clear benefits!

Thanks for bringing this up. Official support will be provided for VIP users, on one license per domain basis. VIP users may install in numerous domains, but support is only given for one specific domain.
Regular users will not receive any support, and will use a free version of flowplayer (checkout my other replies below) which has an overlay.
VIP users will be able to download a commercial variant of flowplayer which they can skin to their liking.

*oops: on one domain per license, instead of the other way round.

I see 1.7 is in beta. Will this be 1.8 when released, or will we be waiting for another version after 1.7 is released?

We are now using odd number for beta versions, and even number for Stable versions. So 1.7.x Beta IS 1.8.x Stable.

So that also means that you now can buy one license and use it for multiple domains?

Basically yes. However the guys will probably provide support for one domain only (per purchase).

So, does it mean the video player will no longer need license key?

Flowplayer Free version will be used. As mentioned in flowplayer.org, the free version will have a flowplayer overlay when viewed full-screen.
Subscribers will be able to download commercial version of flowplayer through their download page.

It's nice to be taken completely by surprise once in a while! :) I'll continue to be a VIP user of JS, but the idea of a fresh injection of coding talent is an exciting one... It's a brave step to take, but I believe everybody will be better off for it. :)
