JomSocial 2.4, Celebrating Your Memories

This is the first of many blog posts that will be posted in the next coming weeks, updating you, our loyal fans with the hottest JomSocial news, most especially on JomSocial 2.4 development updates and behind-the-scenes shots.

We have officially started developing JomSocial 2.4 shortly after the release of JomSocial 2.2.1. Our developers are grouped into four with each group having a dedicated web-designer to bring in the creative juice; doodling everywhere in our office.  Seriously, they do doodle everywhere. Proof of this will be shown in the next blog post, your honor.

Each group handles a specific area of JomSocial 2.4; developer tinkering the codes for new features & performance updates while the designers will turn their doodles (lets call them ‘design blueprints’ shall we?) into actual JomSocial structure, designed with utmost concern for user interactivity and usability.

Let your pictures glow

It has been a while since we last update our Photo Gallery area and boy; it is in dire need of one. With scalpel blades and detailed clinical report (thanks to our neverending supply of comments on the forum), we pry open the gallery, inspecting and criticizing our own creation for improvements in JomSocial 2.4.

We have a long list of improvements with us at the end of the session.  The list includes updates in photo upload mechanism to keep us on par, if not better than modern social networking sites out there (yes, we are speaking about you Facebook & Google). A study to compare numerous photo upload solutions has been made and the outcome was a joy for us all.

In JomSocial 2.4, we have an intelligent uploader that would allow you to upload multiple files at once, and depending on your browser, you may drag multiple photos directly from your PC. Older browsers, *cough*IE*cough* will not be able to utilize the feature; hence the uploader will have to automagically switch to legacy mode.

On top of that, the photo listing has been improved to be more professional and clean. With the adaptation on Geo-Mapping feature in earlier JomSocial releases, we are now confident to showcase geo-location data across JomSocial platform. Here in this very blog, you will see the first implementation of it in our newly refurbished photo area, coupled with additional information to facilitate users to browse other albums and sections of JomSocial. In fact, this left panel will see another improvement in JomSocial 3.0 ;)

I might have written tad too long for a typical JomSocial blog. Im afraid I will have to stop here before I disclose everything and leave no surprises for JomSocial 2.4. Wait for next week for updates regarding Events & Groups. Adieu.

Team Charlie: Adam, Amer and Izuddin. They are responsible for numerous updates in Photo gallery.

It has been over a month now and nothing else posted about JS 2.4. If you are still wondering why I have yet to buy JS your inability to follow through on promises and unwillingness to implement requested features would be the reason why. I keep checking back hoping to find updates and some indication that you are working on adding requested features. Your product looked promising, but your business ethics have me extremely worried.

We NEED Global Notifications on the site to our members for LIKES and COMMENTS. I Launched our JomSocial site on Sept. 5th 2011. Have 1700 Registered Members and adding about 100 a day right now and two weeks after launch, it's extremely obvious that the lack of this really hurts member interaction which in turn hurts site usage. Please tell me this is going to be fixed in 2.4! When can we expect it?

I'm very disappointed that Relationship models will not be implemented in JS 2.4. I've been waiting for this for years. Even your support was commenting in the forum that it will be part of the new release just a few weeks ago.

Helo there,

Except the notification feature, I was think that some other features should be highlight in future development.

1) Smiley/emoticon in comment
2) Post videos(youtube) to friend wall
3) Tag friend in wall and comments

I wish this features will be able soon. I see that previously you guy got superparse addon function. Hope that features will be combine in the next release. Thanks.

I am really happy to heard from you regarding notification system in incoming 2.4. I wish some to see some improvement in feed plugin for profile. Currently every feeds from my facebook Notes is way too long.

Hope a function like limiting words per feed will be added. Really cannot wait for 2.4! I am counting! :D

these new features definitely look great, and the new live notification system is surely something everyone is drooling for...

I have a question, will Joomla 1.5 still be supported with Jomsocial 2.4?

Are there any plans to add private (hidden or secret) groups to JomSocial 2.4? It's really important to a small, but key set of our population.

Ah.. Im sorry Chris. There are minimal interest in having hidden groups. In JomSocial 2.4, a lot of attention is given towards enhancing existing group features to make it more user friendly and able to prolong user participation in social nodes.

this is great feature! I cannot wait jomsocial 2.4 release. I wish in the next release, the capability of "real-time comments notification" (wall, photos, video comment) will be implement. Jomsocial is a super great, but without those important function, user will not find jomsocial interesting.

I will renew my account if jomsocial making changes especially for "Real-time comments notification"

Looks nice! You say you will improve the phot gallery but I can´t see here that you will implement photo categories, will you? A lot of users are screaming for photo categories and no one understands why you won´t and that function which I think is a basic function.

sorry erik,
but I don't think that categories are main stuff of a community. I think the opposite is right and I don't wanna have photo or video categories for example. Think about facebook - there is NO category and they're doing good ;-)

and if somebody wants categories there are soooo many gallery addons for joomla available...
this is one of jomsocial's problems in the past. They try to be everything: A photo gallery, youtube orwhatever and so REAL main things (like birthday notifications) are missing. just my 2cents

'Categorization' is a legacy leftovers from physical file system. It is not fluid enough in a social ecosystem because it actually limits user discovery. We have planned for a more robust method of media identification & linkage in JomSocial 3.0, by getting rid of categories altogether (yes, groups and events will also be affected).

I assure you that we have researched well into this. You will definitely see a more lively community once the new feature is implemented in JomSocial 3.0.

Hi Francois!

We are aware of your requests on our forum! JomSocial 2.4 will feature numerous improvements for existing features in the project, you will definitely love it! As it turns out, we have to skip relationship models in JomSocial 2.4 as we feel that notification update is our top-most priority for the next version, as requested by many.

With the improvements in social areas of JomSocial, you will see that users will stick longer on the site, browsing from one area of JomSocial to other related areas with ease, and fun!
