JomSocial 2.4 Photo Slider

We are excited to announce that the most anticipated JomSocial 2.4 “Boulevard” has been released. This is the tenth major release for JomSocial!

JomSocial 2.4 boasts major improvements on virtually all social nodes in the community. No corners are left untouched, with popular segments in JomSocial polished to further improve user interface and usability in lieu with upcoming technology in the social revolution. Skip to What’s New in JomSocial 2.4 or continue below for more awesome screenshots.

Take our new photo album page for example. Not only we have a new view for featured album, the album view itself have been reinvented to provide a better glance overview of the whole album.

Talking about photo viewing, JomSocial 2.4 offers a whole new experience while viewing a single photo. You can easily browse through the album with our brand new Photo Slider. For avid photo contributors, here is a good news! You can easily drag and drop multiples files onto the browser and upload them.

JomSocial 2.4 Photo Slider

We have also implemented many features to help users discover new content. On group listing page, users will be able to check what’s going on in other groups. You will notice the same design pattern when you view photo albums, videos and events.

JomSocial 2.4 Photo Slider

I'd like to let you know more about all the new features (there are a lot of them!) but we have prepared What’s New in JomSocial 2.4 page for that purpose. Once you are done with the page, proceed to Download page to get the latest version of JomSocial. Don’t forget to refer to the Fuqaha’s Best Practice on Upgrading JomSocial.

If you are not yet a customer, and you have been waiting for 2.4 release, now is the best time to purchase the award-winning social networking component for Joomla.

Please, I have a question about the profile in JomSocial, why you do not use tabs for the news feed and another one for applications, I think the profile will be much better and more readable and will be loved by the users and the community, as you did with the groups and events! thank you for answering me ^ ^

What happened to the implementation of the field profile read-only? It 'already? How do I create a field in which only show a message to users?

today i'v installed the new Jomsocial 2.4 on my local server and i'm frankly a little disappointed about the Default Temlate design compared to the 2.2 version! It looks all a kind of boring .. the Bar above the Activity Stream slider is not longer there and the new little tooltips are also tedious! no more borders arround the avatar thumbs..and so on. remove something does not always bring an improvement! ;-) I personally think the new Photo Upload and the Album Location Map is a huge step forward. i like this technical part..the Photo development team earns my highest respect, but the design devs should go inside for while and rewoke few things!! this was not a huge step forward guys! The Photo Slider Thumbs in the detail view is not clickable? and the Location map should also open by default. there are a lot of more things wich not realy thought to end..anyway this is just my first impression about the new Release. thanks

Why JomSocial? "Build, customize, and extend your social network the way you like it with the best Open Source Community Software." Source: http://www.jomsocial.com/

or because of the still not clickable/searchable multiple select fields!? Since 3 years still the same sh.. :-(

how shall i customize and extend my social network without these basic thing???

Ok so we are now LIVE with 2.4 on our site for 24 hours. Question 1...Why am I seeing all the messages I SENT in my Inbox and in my SENT items? Is that a setting I am missing or something. I should only see messages I have RECEIVED in my inbox, not the messages I have sent. Please advise. Thanks. Love the updates though. :)

It is expensive and what is even worse is that there are no current translations for many languages. At least the competetive products make sure that many languages are supported. Jomsocial apparantly does not care about that at all.
knuffiwuffi

there are more then 2000 lines within the language file. Just to give you an idea on how complex JomSocial became. It is not that easy to maintain multiple languages without community help. This work needs to be done by locals, otherwise you will get a bad translation.

I was wondering why so many broken plugins and modules are still packed together with 2.4 installer. We really have no idea what is working and what is not.

The site Addons list are also badly outdated. No idea which addon can be trusted.

Hope you guys slot out these problems. No point giving us tons of useless freebies that won't work since 1.6. Thanks

What social network software charges for each user?

I wasn't objecting to the price of JomSocial, just the decrease in what you get for it. There are often big discounts for new purchases and renewals, but the idea of having to renew twice a year is not one I like. Where's the value?

I don't care much about new features, especially when existing functionality is still buggy and undeveloped in many areas. Upgrades mean work, especially when you've got special design and functional modifications, integrations with other extensions, etc. Pushing out new releases and touting what they do is aimed at new customers. Long term users will prefer to have one or two solid, major, stable releases in a year, preferably with a hands-free upgrade process.

Its a nice product, but I think a 100$ every 6 mnds is expensiv. I know there is software out there that cost more..:)

A suggestion about the pricing changes: taking away the 12 month support + download access permanently (except for renewals made before Dec. 5) is not a good idea from a marketing and customer service standpoint, because it takes something away and adds nothing new without lowering the price. You are charging more for less. Most of all, this move does not solve the problems I imagine the 12 month offer causes for you.

My guess is that it was never a good idea to allow 12 months of support. Download access, sure -- that's attractive to customers, and it is inherently problematic to cut off after a short period of time because that leads to more hacked sites and damage to your brand and Joomla's. But for you to potentially have to field support requests from users for a whole year means you're going to be BUSY, especially with the most cranky and unskilled people trying to DIY a social website with little to no prior knowledge or experience. That's got to be a nightmare. Maybe the customers who never or seldom use support subsidize the support hogs, but it's still a costly model.

My suggestion is to leave the 12 month download access intact, or at least an option, but make support limited to a certain number of tickets or hours. Ideally, support should be something customers can pay for as they go based on the amount of your support staff's time that they use.

JOIN IN AND PROVIDE CONSTRUCTIVE JOMSOCIAL 2.4 POSTMORTEM FEEDBACK

Any savvy software developer and development group that wants to improve their products should conduct project post mortems after every release of a project. While this comment section is gaining more posts, and pointed comments (some negative because of personal wants and needs not being met with JS 2.4) I suggest that a more constructive approach is needed if we want to help the Jomsocial team improve the development process for the next version of Jomsocial. If you want to join in and provide constructive Project PostMortem feedback, join this thread with the link below and show the JS Team that we are part of the improvement process.

I for one feel the Jomsocial Team made a vast improvement in their development and beta processes, especially considering the amount of features added to JS 2.4, and the amount of bug fixes. I followed them almost every day as a beta tester. Some may not agree, and have grips, which take away from the teams accomplishments, but there are many beta testers like me who feel this JS 2.4 Release version is a real solid release considering all the compelling new features.

I have added a thread in the Board index Community Support (Non-Support Scope) Development/Beta Testers Chat/JomSocial 2.4.x JomSocial 2.4

Jomsocial 2.4 Release Developer Tester Post Mortem Feedback

URL to thread:
http://www.jomsocial.com/forum/index.php?f=135&t=37168&rb_v=viewtopic

This is also some feedback in a screencast I put together for the Jomsocial team. They are some feedback and some thoughts on Jomsocial 2.4 and some suggestions for the next version.

Add Facebook friends as JomSocial friends after initial Facebook Connect

When a user currently signs up with Facebook Connect, they are all alone on a new website. After the initial Facebook Connection, the new user should automatically become friends with their Facebook friends. A single FB API call will give you a list of the user's friends who are using the current app so this would be pretty simple to implement.

This would give new users an immediate sense of community, belonging, and social proof that the website is being used by their friends. it would also provide a better starting point for new users to explore the website. I strongly believe that this would vastly improve the number of loyal and returning members.

If a new FBConnect user is auto-friended with other users, an Activity Stream comment should be created that says, "NEW_USER has connected with Facebook and is now friends with FB_FRIEND_1, FB_FRIEND_2, FB_FRIEND_3 AND FB_FRIEND_4". This activity stream comment would provide some transparency so users wouldn't wonder why they suddenly have new friends.

It might be best to give front-end user options to disallow the auto-friending of new Facebook friends who join the website after them.

When user sign up with facebook connect, he could choose his data to login (user and above all password) to jomsocial or he will have to do login always by facebook connect?

Unfortunately we are forced to connect via facebook, even if our data (login and password) are already stored, we must logically be able to conncter without having to go through "Sign in with Facebook"!
We should have the choice to connect via "Sign in with Facebook" or by entering our login and our password (the same password used on facebook)!!

If you remember before it was possible to create your account via "facebook connect" and then have free access to JomSocial without being obliged to do so again by "FB connect". What sense is the fact that you have now eliminated this feature and force the user to always access via "FB connect"?

How stable is this version? Good or bad? Why am I reading negative reviews on the forum?
knuffiwuffi

November 10, 2011
2.4 is stable with my Joomla 1.7.2...some minor issues are already in focus. JS just started a new ticket system which will help wipe out single user issues and core issues. Some negativ reviews belong to announced features for 2.4 that are not in yet. Dev team decided not to hurry those features and wait for next release to have them A.stable B.perform good so there are no issues on managed server or big communities. In past cycles JS team cleaned up core pretty well which will help future releases.

What a disappointment! You promised that the recent activities have had internal notifications in version 2.4 (read this post: http://www.jomsocial.com/forum/index.php?f=41&t=35164&rb_v=viewtopic). Now you tell me to be ready for 2.6. I bought JomSocial more than a year ,since version 1.6, and a few updates have been really useful. Even today there are serious and old problems such as poor management of the advanced search, bad management of the multi-language function (the recent activities are not translated in the language selected because they are stored in the database, so the user sees a display in different languages), notifications internal comment and "like" absent, sparse system of points, multilingual e-mail notification system lacks, the absence of the "secret" event, so if a user has to create one for his birthday, all users of the community can know the details, poor content of the event (inability to add files, comments, photos ..) and i could continue. These are serious deficiencies that a component as JomSocial should not have. The important thing is to add the very useful "drag and drop" function for uploading photos. Before we couldn't do this. Your fortune is that Jomsocial doesn't have a serious competition. Congratulations!

We are aware at how important notifications are. The foundation for upcoming notifications feature has been developed concurrently with JomSocial 2.4 since day one of 2.4 development. What you see in JomSocial 2.4's email notification is just part of the beginning of notifications overhaul. Since the foundation of the notifications is already part of JomSocial 2.4, you will see quicker release of JomSocial 2.6 early in 2012 simply because the spine is already there.

We are not able to implement it straightaway in JomSocial 2.4 because our early tests show that this much requested internal notifications may quickly drain server performance.

Imagine this scenario:
1. A photo has 20 comments, with 11 distinct users
2. A new comment has been posted, and of course the 11 users have to be notified + the photo uploader.
3. In essence, 12 new database entries have to created for all these users, for just one comment on a photo.
4. Replicate this with different notifiable medium, such as video comments, discussion replies, media likes.
5. This can easily cripple medium to large Joomla site.

No matter how important a feature is, we will not ship it into JomSocial core until we are satisfied with its performance. I am sure you are well aware that our user base ranges from small hobby sites to sites with hundreds of thousands of users, and not all these sites can afford to get better servers.

TL;DR : Performance is top in our list. We will not ship a feature if it slows your site down.

francesco, how arrogant are you? not many of us can afford vps or dedicated hosting. i know your requests are valid, but what they have come up in jomsocial 2.4 r splendid. surely your not going to dismiss the entire updates due to just one drawback, would you?
Francesco
Francesco
November 09, 2011
Hi Werberg, i am not arrogant. Do not miss the point of discussion. I want only tell that a community component has the logical goal to manage a lot of users in the best way. This is the nature of a community. Believe me for me it is also difficult to buy a dedicated hosting to, but this is another thing. This is not my problem and not yours. Jomsocial team has to allow every users to manage in the best way own community website. Don't confuse my attitude as arrogant. Everyone has own needs, yours are valid but not the only and mine to.
Bye
Francesco
Francesco
November 09, 2011
We obviously have different points of view. In my opinion, a component that manages a community must provide for management of many users, because the community expect just that.
Do you like it or not, but Facebook is the yardstick for all social networking sites.
The requests that I made you are now a standard and can not be missed. I'm not talking about specific functions but normal.
I think you should worry to complete the many unfinished features that Jomsocial has instead insert new ones.
The feature incomplete give more problems than missing, because does not satisfy users and force me to contract a private developer to fill your gaps. In this way, i spend more money.
An example: how does a user to share a post by choosing only one or more users? You think it's absurd request? Or, users are now accustomed to this? As you can see the privacy management is inflexible by today's standards.
I am not talking only about recent activities but other things to.
Today you would use a car that has no the power steering?
Like I always said, the details make the difference and you do not care just these. But obviously this is my point of view and that's how I do in my work.

just wait for the next release. In the past 6 month JomSocial team got rid of a lot of issues and cleaned up their product pretty well (lang file and css as well as improving JS usability and support tools on this site). I am sure they do work at remaining issues right now, but they just can't handle all requests at one time.

I already have a request from a company with +10.000 employes, but I will have to recommend to wait for next release to smash some of the little things (login module + not. icons and email login, advanced search module, SEO lang linking, FileSharing)...but, I can see that you guys are working hard to get a clean software that will suit even bigger companies. Really good work as far as I can see. Thank you for the hugs...makes me feel really good ;) Take care (by the way...nice new ticket system...powerup your app store to get a better cut)
