JomSocial 2.4 "Boulevard" Released!
Posted by: irwan on Nov 8, 2011

We are excited to announce that the most anticipated JomSocial 2.4 “Boulevard” has been released. This is the tenth major release for JomSocial!
JomSocial 2.4 boasts major improvements on virtually all social nodes in the community. No corners are left untouched, with popular segments in JomSocial polished to further improve user interface and usability in lieu with upcoming technology in the social revolution. Skip to What’s New in JomSocial 2.4 or continue below for more awesome screenshots.
Take our new photo album page for example. Not only we have a new view for featured album, the album view itself have been reinvented to provide a better glance overview of the whole album.
Talking about photo viewing, JomSocial 2.4 offers a whole new experience while viewing a single photo. You can easily browse through the album with our brand new Photo Slider. For avid photo contributors, here is a good news! You can easily drag and drop multiples files onto the browser and upload them.

We have also implemented many features to help users discover new content. On group listing page, users will be able to check what’s going on in other groups. You will notice the same design pattern when you view photo albums, videos and events.

I'd like to let you know more about all the new features (there are a lot of them!) but we have prepared What’s New in JomSocial 2.4 page for that purpose. Once you are done with the page, proceed to Download page to get the latest version of JomSocial. Don’t forget to refer to the Fuqaha’s Best Practice on Upgrading JomSocial.
If you are not yet a customer, and you have been waiting for 2.4 release, now is the best time to purchase the award-winning social networking component for Joomla.

or because of the still not clickable/searchable multiple select fields!? Since 3 years still the same sh.. :-(
how shall i customize and extend my social network without these basic thing???
The site Addons list are also badly outdated. No idea which addon can be trusted.
Hope you guys slot out these problems. No point giving us tons of useless freebies that won't work since 1.6. Thanks
I wasn't objecting to the price of JomSocial, just the decrease in what you get for it. There are often big discounts for new purchases and renewals, but the idea of having to renew twice a year is not one I like. Where's the value?
I don't care much about new features, especially when existing functionality is still buggy and undeveloped in many areas. Upgrades mean work, especially when you've got special design and functional modifications, integrations with other extensions, etc. Pushing out new releases and touting what they do is aimed at new customers. Long term users will prefer to have one or two solid, major, stable releases in a year, preferably with a hands-free upgrade process.
My guess is that it was never a good idea to allow 12 months of support. Download access, sure -- that's attractive to customers, and it is inherently problematic to cut off after a short period of time because that leads to more hacked sites and damage to your brand and Joomla's. But for you to potentially have to field support requests from users for a whole year means you're going to be BUSY, especially with the most cranky and unskilled people trying to DIY a social website with little to no prior knowledge or experience. That's got to be a nightmare. Maybe the customers who never or seldom use support subsidize the support hogs, but it's still a costly model.
My suggestion is to leave the 12 month download access intact, or at least an option, but make support limited to a certain number of tickets or hours. Ideally, support should be something customers can pay for as they go based on the amount of your support staff's time that they use.
Any savvy software developer and development group that wants to improve their products should conduct project post mortems after every release of a project. While this comment section is gaining more posts, and pointed comments (some negative because of personal wants and needs not being met with JS 2.4) I suggest that a more constructive approach is needed if we want to help the Jomsocial team improve the development process for the next version of Jomsocial. If you want to join in and provide constructive Project PostMortem feedback, join this thread with the link below and show the JS Team that we are part of the improvement process.
I for one feel the Jomsocial Team made a vast improvement in their development and beta processes, especially considering the amount of features added to JS 2.4, and the amount of bug fixes. I followed them almost every day as a beta tester. Some may not agree, and have grips, which take away from the teams accomplishments, but there are many beta testers like me who feel this JS 2.4 Release version is a real solid release considering all the compelling new features.
I have added a thread in the Board index Community Support (Non-Support Scope) Development/Beta Testers Chat/JomSocial 2.4.x JomSocial 2.4

This is also some feedback in a screencast I put together for the Jomsocial team. They are some feedback and some thoughts on Jomsocial 2.4 and some suggestions for the next version.

When a user currently signs up with Facebook Connect, they are all alone on a new website. After the initial Facebook Connection, the new user should automatically become friends with their Facebook friends. A single FB API call will give you a list of the user's friends who are using the current app so this would be pretty simple to implement.
This would give new users an immediate sense of community, belonging, and social proof that the website is being used by their friends. it would also provide a better starting point for new users to explore the website. I strongly believe that this would vastly improve the number of loyal and returning members.
If a new FBConnect user is auto-friended with other users, an Activity Stream comment should be created that says, "NEW_USER has connected with Facebook and is now friends with FB_FRIEND_1, FB_FRIEND_2, FB_FRIEND_3 AND FB_FRIEND_4". This activity stream comment would provide some transparency so users wouldn't wonder why they suddenly have new friends.
It might be best to give front-end user options to disallow the auto-friending of new Facebook friends who join the website after them.
We should have the choice to connect via "Sign in with Facebook" or by entering our login and our password (the same password used on facebook)!!
can you please tell me what is the difference between 2.4 RC2 and this stable version ?
Is there any change logs ?
I've the RC2 version heavily modified for a unique site, and I don't want to lose all my works.
Please help me with this!
We are too waiting for the comments/ like notification and few other problems to be fixed soon.
thanks & great work !!
We are not able to implement it straightaway in JomSocial 2.4 because our early tests show that this much requested internal notifications may quickly drain server performance.
Imagine this scenario:
1. A photo has 20 comments, with 11 distinct users
2. A new comment has been posted, and of course the 11 users have to be notified + the photo uploader.
3. In essence, 12 new database entries have to created for all these users, for just one comment on a photo.
4. Replicate this with different notifiable medium, such as video comments, discussion replies, media likes.
5. This can easily cripple medium to large Joomla site.
No matter how important a feature is, we will not ship it into JomSocial core until we are satisfied with its performance. I am sure you are well aware that our user base ranges from small hobby sites to sites with hundreds of thousands of users, and not all these sites can afford to get better servers.
TL;DR : Performance is top in our list. We will not ship a feature if it slows your site down.
Bye
Do you like it or not, but Facebook is the yardstick for all social networking sites.
The requests that I made you are now a standard and can not be missed. I'm not talking about specific functions but normal.
I think you should worry to complete the many unfinished features that Jomsocial has instead insert new ones.
The feature incomplete give more problems than missing, because does not satisfy users and force me to contract a private developer to fill your gaps. In this way, i spend more money.
An example: how does a user to share a post by choosing only one or more users? You think it's absurd request? Or, users are now accustomed to this? As you can see the privacy management is inflexible by today's standards.
I am not talking only about recent activities but other things to.
Today you would use a car that has no the power steering?
Like I always said, the details make the difference and you do not care just these. But obviously this is my point of view and that's how I do in my work.
just wait for the next release. In the past 6 month JomSocial team got rid of a lot of issues and cleaned up their product pretty well (lang file and css as well as improving JS usability and support tools on this site). I am sure they do work at remaining issues right now, but they just can't handle all requests at one time.
Bye.
our devs mentioned that some of the issues seem unique to your site, and they have already requested for access. Kindly respond to the ticket. :)
PS: You have been a very big help in the beta forum. Here's one big HUG from us!
There is a discount when you register as a member on our community. http://www.jomsocial.com/community.html (if you don't see it, you might have to turn off adblocker)

i'm missing there the language file changes from 2.2.5 to the Stable 2.4 Release!?
JomSocial would be twice as awesome if it was available for WordPress though. Clients are always asking me if it is.
We will update it soon as the entire team is on high alert with the release of 2.4. :)
This is the only function that could possibly draw crowds from Facebook acct to Jomsocial and its not working. Why more gimmicks instead of COre?
Thank you.
