JomSocial 1.5, What's New? Where Can I Get It?
Posted by: azrul on Sep 15, 2009
If you have been following our twitter, at http://twitter.com/JomSocial , you might have caught the fact that the latest build of JomSocial has entered a public beta testing stage. By 'public', I mean, all our existing customers can download and install it right now.
So, the big question is, what's new ? There are a couple of new interesting features waiting for you. Here are just some of them.
1. Photo and video support for groups.
Group members can now upload photos and video to be shared among the group members. Obviously, group admin can decide to enable or disable this new feature. Group admin can also decide either to allow members to upload videos or photos, or to limit it to just the group admin.

2. Featured content
Site admin will now be able to highlight certain content within JomSocial. You can 'feature' any user, photos or video to give it a little more exposure.

3. Sharing is caring
Easily share any pages off your content to any social bookmarking services, or you can have it email to anyone easily.

4. Photo tagging
You can now tag your friend in any of your photo!

These are just some of the hot new features of the upcoming JomSocial, there are tons of other small, yet important enhancement that makes JomSocial feels more polished than ever. If we dump the svn change log, it might takes you guys a week just to go through it.
Now, where can I get it?
If you are a customer, please head to the download page and once you are logged in, you will be greeted with a password. Use this password to access our locked beta forum here, http://bit.ly/3fUX3K.
Note: Use this beta build at your own risk! but having said that, the build is rock solid! :)

Thanks cyberblogger
I am not dissapointed with the release. It links social networks together which helps me "somewhat". The gift of god in the progamming for me was adding photo/video support to groups. Finally & great job on that one.
JomSocial with alot of work turned out to incorporate beautifully into my template so i will continue using it for another update or so. Dolphin was gay & did not like the other ones i played with before Jomsocial.
Jomsocial needs to break free from the trend & create new and stronger features because in reality the majority of us are trying to venture out "off the beaten path".
orait..I'M TOTALLY FINE WITH PURCHASING THEIR LICENSE, but they did not give me any GUARANTEE that after I purchase JOMSOCIAL they will able to solve it, so...WHAT THE HECK? Paying for nothing! My purpose of buying is to USE IT PROPERLY AND HAPPILY so JOMSOCIAL SCRIPT WOULD NOT GIVE ME TROUBLE because I believe, I am paying for SERVICE not for PROBLEM.
Again, thanks for their FOC customer service support, especially to "HER" who make me really disappointed with "HER" answer given. Once I was thinking to make jomsocial popular among people, now, I have no reason to visit here.
Who ever your customer, they are consumer, once you disgrace them, they will not return back. Please understand what are "Before, During and After" sales customer support mean. GO BACK TO BASIC GIRL!
Do not take to heart about my word, TAKE IT TO YOUR BRAIN! THINK and give better services, be PROFESSIONAL, be adult, LISTEN to people voice and PLEASE, do not embarrassing our country product. If you are University Graduate, I think you should able to understand.
Thanks again.
Consumer who concern.
I mentione Dolphin previously and since then discovered SocialEngine. Absolutely amazing! It's not Joomla, but who really cares as long as the code works and it is effortless with all of the bells and whistles you need for your community. This past week I have deployed two sites with SocialEngine and it is a breeze. The code is bulletproof and accessible, the css and templating is available and deep. Best of all, they are based out of Pasadena, CA. They are on domestic west coast time, they are always available by phone, email and ticket, quick to respond and they love to help. Check out SocialEngine.net, I will never use JSoc again.
Here's what is REALLY FUNNY. This is not TRUE 1.5 NATIVE. It doesn't comply with Joomla 1.5 native standards. It still runs in native but doesn't use alot of the core Jclass stuff. Great job pushing your joomla 1.0 code into Joomla 1.5 and then selling it to people for $100+. How about paying attention to your customers instead of the gimmicks.
Looks like some better options are on the horizon with capable and RESPECTED partners signing on. http://www.anahitapolis.com/
JomSocial had a good run and made a couple dollars. Too bad they didn't reinvest that into hiring more staff and some competant support staff that isn't asking the same questions as the customers.
Won't be buying anything from you or renewing ever again.
Bye bye Azrul.

An associate just dumped JSoc for Dolphin because of all the great features it has, far more than JSoc!
Wake up and smell the roses Azrul!
There are a lot of basic things that are in uservoice that aren't implemented. Yet you give me photo tagging - who gives a shit! Give us what we need and the song I hear over and over again is stronger Groups. They currently SUCK. WYSIWYG in posts. These are basic things!
You have an amazing product, I love it and will continue to use it, FOR NOW...

This DormNoise.com product seems like it might be good to look into for ideas about adding calendaring functionality directly into JomSocial.
Thanks.

Regarding the last post by Walkman, have you even bothered to pay attention to this commentary? Your suggestion is ludicrous and definitely goes beyond what JSoc or any other community should offer. Use subdomains or hidden links in Joomla and point them back to the community user if you want to do something like that. We are all trying to get this to be a stronger professional component and your suggestion does not serve that purpose.
Azrul Team - You have impassioned users here, but we are not being heard. An excellent example of this is where you removed the web site field for a group. People clearly wanted it there. For that matter, the groups section is pitifully limited. I just paid a developer to work out some better solutions within your framework for me.
You have a great product, figure out how to interact with your userbase better --please.
1. Click on Download
2. Enter your email and Order Reference number
3. Find there JomSocial 1.5 Beta Access
Cheers!
I have 5 JomSocial sites but all of those clients yearn for more than what Azrul and his team seem to want to give us, which makes absolutely no sense as they clearly are top notch developers. Notwithstanding, the only reason I can latch onto as to why JomSocial is not being developed for a more professional use is that, as many users have stated here and in the past, Azrul and his team either does not pay attention and read the suggestions from their clients, customers, users et al; or, they just don't give a rats patootie about us or their product.
As you may know, this has been a week of Muslim holiday and as such Azrul and staff are out of touch. Maybe with combined voices, he and his team may be able to discern the importance of the many comments herein contained, pay attention and start giving a shit.
And what about the editors? Do they still remove line breaks on profiles and bulletins?
I just couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw that. I mean, come on, we are talking about version 1.2.206 here! I will have to take a second look at Community Builder which does have these basic features.
I've been a JomComment/MyBlog customer since the older Mambo/Joomla 1.0 days, but it has always been difficult for me as a customer to feel like my voice has been heard...I still remember the first time I asked about why MyBlog's editor couldn't be changed (I'm sure others have had their own wishlists for MyBlog as well) and now with JomSocial being the primary focus of the company (at least by my guess) there are things that I've now recently voiced as being "much needed" for the organization I work for, and others have voiced their opinion here as well in their comments above.
I even took a look at the UserVoice page for JomSocial again just now and it even looks like quite a few of our wishes are up there:
make the groups more powerful, similar to Meetup.com (420 votes, accepted)
An integrated music player for music oriented communities (178 votes, accepted)
integrated calendar and event participation system (474 votes, not yet accepted)
Mini WYSIWYG Editor (238 votes, not yet accepted)
multiple users/profiles with their own fields (320 votes, not yet accepted)
file sharing within the group (13 votes)
Add Documents App for Students (18 votes)
Then looking at your team page:
http://azrul.com/about-us/team.html
I see 11 people listed
6 of them listed as Software Developers (including Mark and the obvious Azrul)
As far as we (your customers) know you have a total of 4 different products: JomComment, MyBlog, NiceTalk, and JomSocial
Of course that is simplifying things quite a bit (you have multiple modules/plugins for most of your products plus your websites to worry about)...but the things is you have (according to your website) 11 people working for your organization and going back to my initial point...have none of your own employees noticed that the Azrul.com homepage JomSocial version is slightly out of date? It's a small detail, but fairly important (of course, the version on this website is accurate luckily).
So, just to cut this off (as I believe I've probably written way too much already) what I'd like to say is that I think your company is great and that you guys have a great product on your hands, I just wish that communications with your customers were more frequent and more detailed (we hardly know when the heck a new release is coming and when we do there is usually more than a bit of disappoint in the announced features because what featured were being targeted for the next release were never discussed with us ahead of time). If anything I dislike being disappointed and I dislike having to wait an undefined time period for a feature I really want. It's difficult to make the decision to modify your code, because I'm going to then have to remember to copy the change over with the next release, it's also hard to make the decision to create my own plugin if you're going to end up creating it yourself as part of JomSocial...so we need to know what you're working on because it will help us be happier customers (and hopefully it will help you too :-).
Thanks for listening and Happy Eid ul-Fitr to you guys!
I'm not a customer, but was looking at purchasing, prior to doing so I thought I'd have a look around the site more and the forums to read what others have to say. This is a very disappointing read as I thought that Jomsocial could have worked for us, but it seems that gimmicks are a priority over making the current features more useful and adaptable.
You've ignored your customers, but now this is affecting your acquisition of new customers. I do hope you listen to your paying clients, because if I was one of them, then I'd too be happy, especially as this seems to be a major release from 1.2 to 1.5
@ Omar Ramos, Joomla's 1.6 release if they stick to the ACL plans will do what you're wanting the groups to do independent of tricks like groups.
http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1036-joomla-16-access-control-design-concepts.html
Doesn't mean there's no place for them but it means that if Joomla's devs stick to this they won't need to jury rig ACL around it. In this case Arzul and company don't and shouldn't be reinventing the wheel.
Speaking of which, I'll echo that, the improvements to a large degree do that (tagging already exists in SIM Gallery for example). While ignoring the needs of a more professional community.
Also the emphasis on FB/YouTube template design make the native JSoc templates completely unusable for a site like mine. I understand they they're intended as samples but if I showed them to the client before installing JSoc I'd get a horrifed NO!
There needs to be more work on what the professional and "adult oriented" social sites need (which is often the same thing) as opposed to kids. Not that kids sites don't have their place but that there are others out there who make use of JSoc for other things and they need their place too.
JSoc has come a long long way from it's origins to where it is now. What it needs now is plugin capability so that other functionality can be easily added without messing up the look of whatever template we use (please do that with MyBlog too!!!!!
) so that JSoc becomes useful to more than a small segment of the market. You're so darned close it's frustrating. Just listen!

I will be giving Community Builder a second look.
First, I think it is only fair to say you have a good product. We just launched MarketSense (www.marketsense.com)in BETA and the feedback I've gotten is quite similar to the other posts - we need to focus on features for the professional. While I understand some are using JomSocial for MySpace type communities, I think many are using it for "niche" professional communities.
It seems to me you would be well served to really look at these posts and possibly put together a "task force" of customers to help identify the KEY features that would add value to JomSocial. Again, good product, however it could be made so much better.
Another thought would be to become much more proactive in embracing the development community to design their products to transparently work with JomSocial. Doing this would quickly add a truckload of functionality and put you in a position that nobody else could keep up!
Let us know if we can help.
My final say : it's what you make of it
I think you wasted too much time in implementing features that your partners have been doing and come up with less complete features. Besides, it will scare away any developers trying to enrich our beloved jomsco.
I upgraded to 1.2 but not using any of jomsoc's video features because hwdvideoshare has been doing a better job.
And now, one of the interesting feature (phot tagging), is actually has been provided by SimGalley (and also a lot other nice features by SimGallery).
In my opinion, I think your developers' time would be a lot better spent to enhance interactivity of message postings and possibility of creating a jomsoc mobile applications. One of the key success of Facebook is in it's message posting interactivity as well as freely available facebook mobile applications.
Well anyway, we all want to spare time to write critics because we love jomsoc and we want to continue to use jomsoc. And if you love us as your customers, you better start listening to us....
Anyway, well done for the 1.5. BTW, I can not find password code to download 1.5 in your email message. Pls advice. Thanks.
For e.g. adding an mp3 player [with play list] at user's profile, creating the possibility to set the country's flag and so on...
Anyway Thank you JomSocial Team!!!
LinkdIn would be INCREDIBLE - especially if you tie it in like you have Twitter and Facebook - as well - get the ability for MP3's on the profile as well (our community is for radio broadcasters and having AirChecks and Demo's on the profiles are very important - and pretty much the only thing I'm having a problem finding a plugin for this thing for).
Other than that... keep up the development and progress, but YES - listen to your peeps out there! We need a system that is really geared towards the professional community that ties in everythign that I'm reading in the comments above! You'll corner the market quickly if you do!
Thanks Guy!

Please, listen to your customers and start implementing features we asked for and not toys for kids.
Think about LinkedIn or Viadeo, not Facebook or MySpace.
The first being the ability to upload files within the group, another being the ability to have a group calendar, being able to email the group as a whole (not just send out a bulletin), and last the ability to create sub groups related to the primary group.
Here's how each of those could be used here on campus if they were available:
We'd start by creating some scripts to batch process our enrolled students, instructors and classes for the semester and automatically create groups for each class (and add the students as members to the group) automatically to JomSocial.
Instructors could then enter in their files for their class to their group without the need to create a separate site.
Instructors could populate their group calendar with all of the assignment dates for the class.
Instructors could send out an email to all their students quickly.
Instructors could create sub groups related to the class (if needed, but more likely it would provide a good way for us to organize all of the groups created each term, for example Fall 2009 -> Class 1, Fall 2009 -> Class 2, Spring 2009 -> Class 1, Spring 2009 -> Class 2, etc.)
Students would be able to know who is in their class and better facilitate communication.
*sigh*...someday perhaps :-).
It would also be nice to enhance some of the basic features in future builds (organize groups and video categories alphabetically) and better plugin and point backend. Where is it ???
Where is it?
Also, any chance of a new lightweight template?
Yes, it is now configurable from back end.
@klausre:
Only in com_community-based sections. Since you have mentioned here, having it in articles seems nice though.
. ps//: FB do not have 2 out of 4 features listed above.
