Facebook Connect may increase your site's traffic 30-100%

I attended a dynamic workshop yesterday called "Best Practices in Social Media Integration for Web Publishers and Content Providers". The discussion was lead by Bob Buch, VP, Business Development at Digg.com.

Here's something he said that I found shocking (but in a good way). According to Digg's research, "..social community sites using the Facebook Connect API have seen their traffic increase from 30 -100%..."

That's HUGE.

Now imagine the possibilities for your JomSocial communities when we roll out JS 1.2 in a couple of weeks-- which will have Facebook Connect for JomSocial! I've tested an early version and it was amazing. I was already logged in to Facebook when I tested it and JS/Facebook Connect retrieved my FB data and pulled it into my test JS community profile with no problems.

Stay tuned---I'll have more info to share about the Web 2.0/Social Media workshops Azrul & I have been attending over the next few days, and of course, I will fill you in on any new JomSocial developments as they come in....

 Best,

Shawn

It isn't for long term - it's just a shorter registration/setup process.

"Login to Facebook, then enter your email address and you're done"

as opposed to:

"Enter your name, enter your email, enter more details, receive a verification email, click that link, upload a photo, and you're done"

Facebook Connect takes away a lot of the headache. As long as you get their email (preferably within the lightbox as a step 2)

Pretty interesting stuff. I think Facebook Connect has a lot of potential, but I’m still a tad concerned about privacy and locking into Facebook’s proprietary system.

Yup.. really agree. I also use Google connect to increase blog traffic ^_^

I havent launched the community yet on my site, but I ran an electronic dance music website that had over 22 000 members, with an average of 55 000 unique visitors every month, something not too big.

I built a mailing list of over 150 000 users over a 2 year period. so thats close to 130 000 optin emails I got running various contests, polls, and promotions.

If your a little creative it's not too hard to get your audiences emails.

I must agree with you that its a little more work, at launch time what you want is activity on your website, and the easier you make it for people to become a member, and the more options you have to me seems better.

If depends on the goals you set for your site, if you're into mailling list marketing fbconnect might not be you best bet, but if your doing onsite marketing, a little greyhat and black hat pratices such as cookie stuffing all you really need is traffic.

So for me, all I need is traffic, I've tried pretty much every domain of internet marketing such as PPC, CPA, adsense, etc. etc. And what I was the most successfull with was onsite marketing.

+ Even if people could get notifications by email of their updates on the site, wil the set their preferences to receive email notices, I personnaly find them very annoying and so does 90% of my friends !

And I pretty sure if we'd do a survey on 10 000 users from different demographics we'd probably get the same results.

Hi Padman!

I'm glad you answered! smilies/smiley.gif

Did you tried JFConnect? Or any FBC component? If yes what were your results? Did you get more users? Did users filled their ID + e-mail? How many of them?

I know you can redirect people to a page with filling forms. You can do it the way you want and with any promise you want. I'm a websmaster and Linux system administrator for about 15 years now, so I know all that.

What I mean is that you just can't get it in 1 step which is the aim of FC. Except with some kind of MITM attack with a fake certificate but that's not the topic...

Tell me what's the difference:
- Visitor => Registration => User
- Visitor => FBC => Redirect page => Registration = User (

I've been into internet marketing domain for over 4 years now, and have got very good optin rates.

It might not work for you or your audience but one thing for sure my audience will optin to a free I-pod of free guest list to get into a prestigeous nightclub!

With the FBCONNECT module corently available you cant redirect the user to whatever page you want.

Just forward them to an optin page.

That's exactly what I said Padaman: asking for more information! Instead of one step you got 2!

"message all your users": how? You don't have their e-mail address... PM? How will they get it if you can't notify the new PM (no e-mail address)... next time they connect to my website? Whaoooo..... And they can still skip the step... why would they do so? (get a free iPod!? what a joke!!) They will think "I will receive advertisement from this website it's better not to give more information" "And what for? I'm already a member..."

You give your e-mail address ONLY when you HAVE TO! For example when you subscribe. If you count on users goodwill you could be very disappointed... For example I've NEVER give my e-mail address except when I have to.

But what are the supposed advantages of FC? 2 things:
- skip a registration process, avoiding filling forms for users
- get information about users from Facebook

Advantage n°1: fucked up for the reasons evoked (several steps instead of one)
Advantage n°2: ok this works and works fine. I don't need it personally, but I could imagine that some webmasters are happy about it.

I don't think there is any answer for FC advantage n°1. You will always need to ask something more to your user already sick to fill new stuff.

If someone find an alternative please tell me, because I would LOVE to use FC!

If you use your imagination a little bit it's not too hard to get your users email even if facebook connect doesnt provide it.

Just think outside the box a little, you can message all your users via joomla to confirm their registration by filling out a 3 field form. Put an incentive to it, ie: get a chance to win a I-Pod by confirming you resgistration that way you have them opt-in to your list. Link them to a form that will have get their demographic information.

I don't think you will get any useful answer TJ & Dano...

The only answer you will get is: you can ask for their e-mail and password for the first connection of a new user...

This kind of answer is just useless, because if you ask something like this to a new user connected to your web site via FC it means that FC lose all what it's made for: avoid a sign up. Asking this is exactly the same thing as a normal registration (I'm not very clear sorry... my English is quite bad... :s)

The the only advantage which remain from FC (if you get e-mail & pass!! Something that most user will just skip) is that you will get information (avatar, city, etc.) from Facebook... with all the advantages & disadvantages...

As we say in French: you can't get the butter, the money of the butter and the ass of the dairywoman...

Facebook Connect is just a trap...

How do Azrul respond to Ubutux comment?
Ubutux

Facebook Connect is a daylight robbery...

Why? Simply because you don't get the users e-mail address and password...

What does it mean? Your users will never be "yours"...

I tried Facebook Connect for a day with JFB Connect. First I was very happy about it because new users were rising up.

Then I realized how vicious it was: what happen if a user delete his facebook account? Well he can't connect anymore to your website! It's like he never had any account. What happen if one day you don't want to use FBC anymore? You lose all your users because they can't get connected anymore... What happen if you want to send a News Letter to your users? You just can't because you don't have their e-mail address... and so on...

They will never be "your" users but Facebook's users.

So you will tell me that they can give their e-mail address and password in their profile... If you have 100 000 users how many of them will do so? 2000?

FBC is the most vicious concept on the net I've ever seen...

Pushing video back to get FB integration early is a good trade. Plus I think a good stable FB integration will help sell more JS downloads! More sales and downloads = more revenue for Azrul to hire more developers! More developers = faster release cycle.

Thanks!

This is great! I cant wait for this feature! we have been wanting to do a facebook connect for a while over here
April 14, 2009
I have managed to link the FB connect myself to our website and I must say the increase in registration is good. People are lazy to fill the registration form by giving them this option we are making them use it with ease without registration now thats understandly has an good response fromt he viewers.

But increase in traffic has nothing to do with registration, unless you provide something that FB doesnt have, the registered members will never be seen again. So the intially increase in traffic should be used well

I created my site to promote my cartoon and have always wanted to have some social networking going on to really get people motivated. Already since I went live last Thursday I have seen traffic pick up and triple what I have been seeing. Now with facebook connect in the next version update of Jomsocial, I'm super excited to see what happens then, I can't wait. smilies/smiley.gif

I think an earlier release would be great. I understand that a 3 or 4 month release cycle makes sense, but 1.2 has some really big (and possibly buggy) features. I'd imagine having to deal with possible bugs from a smaller update would be easier than having to deal with possible issues from FB Connect, video sharing, etc.

In either case, it all sounds great! Here's hoping we can give our users something new soon!

This is really a must-have in 1.2!

And they should be redirected to invite friends as soon as they log in using their facebook account or maybe have it somewhere integrated on the profil or activity stream...

It would be great if you could work on that for 1.2...
