User integration

1. No additional login module required. One of our earlier aim is to remove any needs for separate login modules. Joomla built-in login module should be good enough. I understand a lot of template club already have a custom coded login module and it would be a waste not to be able to use those.

 2. No required profile field. All profile field are optional and fully customizable. We do not want to force you to have any additional field if you don't want to. If you do specify it however, the registration page will present these fields as you would expect.

3. Doesn't need any database sync. None whatsoever. We want all user to integrate seamlessly with the rest of your site.

I am currently trying to hack together a CB + MyBlog + JomComment + my own custom plugins concoction of a site, and it has not been easy. CB is very limiting in terms of the type of content and layout you can serve up. Their idea of a template is very sad, and I've had to hack into their core files just to make basic changes in a user page's layout.

JomSocial sounds like it would be a lot of help. I'm especially looking forward to functionality similar to facebook's wall, inbox, notifications, status updates, and news feeds. People may scoff at a facebook-clone app, but if making a website user-friendly is your ultimate goal, there's nothing wrong with modeling interaction after a well known product. Plus, I'm counting on the powerful API to allow site developers to write their own custom tweaks and modules to make their site unique from just another facebook clone.

Good luck! Too bad my current project deadline is coming up soon, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to hold out until this is done. But if your previous apps are any indication of this one, I expect this to do great and wonderful things!

First I am very happy and sad that I have found this site. Happy in the fact of this is exactly what I was looking for. CB as most as stated above, is okay, but not for the next generation of web2.0. Sad in the fact that I have spent over $2000 in trying to add different plugin into CB and now found this sitesmilies/cry.gif.

Therefore,

1) As mention above, will this new feature be able to port over users and information from CB into this joomsocial, or would we need to recreate every fields again

2) What about the plugins that was created for CB, is it going to have similar struture type so that we do not have to build the plugin from the bottom up.

3) What is the pricig for this extension

4) Is this extension going to have ACL, because I am setting up a site, with different profiles, such as A, B, C, and therefore some profiles will have different fields, because I want to show different information for different users.

Hi,
I've been using CB for more than a year with a site that has more than 6000 registered users and more than 80.000 visits a month now. We have experience and that reflects in new requirements and new features. I want to be part of Jomsocial.com as a feature/request contributor and tester. Please give us the opportunity. Regards.

There is another company working on something like this call joomunity. They do a lot of things very well. You guys should put your heads together and pump or some serious extensions for community sites.

I'm actually working on a new site now that this would fit perfectly in. Can't wait for the beta!

Question is, will it work well with fireboard?

That's just awesome!
September 24, 2008
the reason why i haven't added a community to my site is because CB is horrible. It's antiquated... and ugly.

I'm already promising to use JomSocial!!!

Some points:

1. Yes, the user database in fully integrated with Joomla user. We are evaluating pulling data from CB, but they might not be ready on time.

2. API and 3rd party integration is a HIGH priority for us. Some preliminary work has been done, but we are working with 3rd party developers to make sure the API is good enough.

3. Template system should be awesome and very easy to use. We are already in talk with several template club that might produce native JomSocial template for their template. This is possible due to our own template override features.

4. Blogging features at the moment will be provided by MyBlog. We will work on MyBlog 3.0 to provide a truly integrated blogging system with JomSocial.

September 24, 2008
Any plans for that going forward? or will you be able to pull those names from the joomla users entries?

Like pretty much everybody here, I'm using MyBlog (Love it!), JomComment (Love it!), and CB (like it, but . . .).

I am very much looking forward to seeing what your crew can do. I think you should have a space on this site for wishlists. Maybe this is. Just in case, here is mine:

1. We really need for all members to have both a public blog and a private blog. They should be able to share blogs (under a full range of categories) with the whole community, but at the same time, have some blogs privately shared only with selected groups.

2. A Forum -- i.e. like Fireboard -- again on the public side and private within groups.

3. A private events calendar for individual groups -- needs to be better than Eventslist, but can simply show event, time, place, details.

4. Member search based on different kinds of memberships -- CB is great at this.

5. An paid membership option (ideally integrated with paypal, etc.)

Looks like your existing feature list covers everything else.

Can't wait.

Right now I'm starting a community based website and it has been truly a hassle trying to make everything work. I have MyBlog handling my news, JomComment handling comments, RS2 Gallery handling photos (heavily modded), EventList running my events page, PHPBB3 handling my forums, Community Builder handling my user accounts and finally JFusion syncing my accounts together. Anything that would take the strain out of this would be awesome.

Whenever this product does come out though I hope there is an easy way to transfer my preexisting community on to the JomSocial platform. I trust that the layouts will be fully customizable which I think is a key component for success.

Thanks for the invitation, and I really look forward to start testing this. As many others I use CB at the moment, but if you manage to do what you say, building a user friendly community component, I'm sure you will rule in the future.

Hoping to see something like what I see in all custom made communities that everyone is used to today, not the ugly CB style that I have to cope with at the moment. So I really look forward to a quick release....

I'm running a big joomla+CB website bridged with vbulletin.
Will you consider developing an integration with vbulletin's users? I just need one-time login.

Can't wait to test JS. smilies/grin.gif

This looks like a great alternative to CB. I'm currently not impressed with CB's usability but for those with a community-based site, there are no other options. JomComment and MyBlog are awesome and I can only imagine how great this is going to be. Count me in for testing.

Cheers,

Thank you for the invite also, I'm definitely looking forward to this. As I could definitely see the potential in using this on my website for many different reasons.

This component looks like it has a lot of potential. One thing I might add is aMember integration would be a feature I would highly value. I've been using community builder to build my sites and its good, but it lacks a professional look and feel.

Will have you a easy to use templating system?

Looking forward to seeing more, thanks.
September 24, 2008
Great to see you working on this type of component. The Joomla community needs more choices in this area. I look forward to testing it out! No 'bridge' is even better!
September 24, 2008
Thanks for the invite. This is something I have been looking for with my site. As Zero stated CB (even the new release) is not user friendly, it lacks some very obvious tools and it looks terrible. I am amazed that some of my users can work out how the heck it works lol.

Also I think that private messaging systems for Joomla work but many do have some big faults, I am glad to see you are addressing that.
I am looking forward the the Beta guys - keep up the good work!

I am very please to see this project underway and will certainly give feedback. CB is nice, however I believe your approach will be a much better solution in the long run.

will you release it under gpl?

There will be a tight integration between MyBlog and JomComment. MyBlog should cover all the blogging needs.

As for 3rd party integration and API, yes, we are trying to make it really easy. To start with (V1 of the API), we will only focus on some core features, but you can expect features like private messaging, user prfile linking and activity stream API to be provided.
September 19, 2008
You're convincing me, let me ask you some questions.

Will users have the chance to have their own blogs? there's the chance of having a community blog from selected entries on these blogs?

Will be truly integrated with major joomla forum extensions, like fireboard or agora?

Will profiles be able to keep track of user joomla articles and jomcomment comments?

Will they API for 3rd party be easy enought, and will not break every new version for strong mplementation of other extensions, like jawards or jreviews?

Thanks! keep the good work!
